Hi, been back to the garage with the squeeky engine. They changed the tension bearing, and cambelt tuesday, took it back wednesday it was squeeling told it was ok. drove it til today then started over heating today so took it back again and told him i wanted sorted:mad:, left it there for a few hours as requested got back up there and he said the thermostat has gone causing the squeel so agreed to let him change it. Still no change he saw it starting to over heat so he got a screwdriver and put it at the top of the engine :(:(and started listening to it. Then started to listen at the bottom bearning and waterpump they figured it's either the pump or bearing! Any way he said it's ok to drive but don't let it over heat! Easier said than done with this car no gauge and no light! So does anyone know any one who can fit one in the birmingham area and how much it will cost?

Yeah he said he could pin point the problem area using a screwdriver, only thing is he still don't know for deffinate til they took half the car apart! I have to be honest i just burst out laughing and turned away!

Looked on the forum but it looks too difficult to do ourselves so was wondering if anyone knew who if there was a garage who does them!

I think most have been done themselves, i doubt there's specific garages that cater for this, what i would suggest is enquiring locally your garages or look in your yellow pages or if you know a mechanic/friend to get them to have a look at doing this

to be honest, i'm not liking the sound of this guys idea of fault finding but so long as your happy with the work, just be sure he isn't systematically swapping everything until you realise he's screwing you over..

On the guage front, pretty sure most reputable garages should be able to fit the parts if you supply them (will be cheaper than asking them to get them). Just ring some up and tell them what you want. See what they say.

I own/run a Fiat specialist workshop and myself sometimes use a large screwdriver to locate engine noises. I have a mechanics stethescope(think thats how you spell it!) but you can hear much better with a screwdriver. If you put your ear to the handle and touch the engine you can work out easily where the noise is coming from. Im asuming this is what the guy at your garage did not just touch various bits with a screwdriver!!

Rich.

hi,
i'll give it a try ringing round! As for the garage trying to screw me i have no worries of that as i watch them with the car and always ask for the old parts back! My dad is always on hand asking questions if they start saying "oh' this is broke, oh' that is broke" when they try the first thing if that don't work i don't pay for the other part!

yep, that's exactly what they did

To be honest we get some new customers asking for the old parts which we have no problem doing but it does not prove much as it would be easy for a garage to give a customer old parts from another car if they wanted to con them.

If you cant trust a garage to the point of asking for the old parts then you should find someone else.

We do a lot of retro fits to older cars or cars that do not come with certain equipment from standard so Im sure other garages should do too.
