General Supermarket Fuel

This could be a good one to discuss. Personnally I buy fuel for me SX Sei at supermarket to the likes of Tesco and Sainsburys - a nice stright 5 mile road where I live and can only get 80mph tops thats on a lucky day - I did buy a tank from Morrisons once and that struggled to 60mph and can smell the 'cat' burning heavy [V].

However this week, decided to get some from Total and wonder top speed of 90mph!

Is it true, you get what you buy fuel wise - go for supermarkets for cheap stuff that might be harmful to the engine - or go for the top names like Total / esso the rest for better quality?

I've tried all brands over the years, and now use either Shell Optimax or Safeway's finest (whichever I'm passing), and can't really tell the difference - but I do get 2 to 3 mpg more from Optimax.

It will be interesting to know -

IME the own brand fuel gives a better result than the supermarkets stuff.
( My old diesel Peugeot 505 became less rattly and you could see people in the rearview mirror at night: less muck out of the exhaust )

i only use esso super unleaded, bp certainly feels a lot worse.. but now i can't get my nectar points

I've noticed that quite a few car manufacturers are not honouring their warranties if supermarket fuels are used. Complaints such as burnt out valves.

Dont know how solid that is, but i've seen a lot of discussion on www.honestjohn.co.uk reference supermarket fuel and there's been a lot of complaints from users of it, and that the quality of the fuel from the supermarkets isn't up to that of Shell, Esso etc.

I never knew Supermarket fuels can do that 2 ur car [:0] quite scary really I normally go 4 standard Unleaded from Total ( altho they call it Premium) Tho i do ocasionally get it from Tesco

Coincidentally, tried 1/2 tank of Optimax for the first time, WOW! Fuel economy is honestly up 25%, and the engine sounds clean and clear.

Probably makes up for the years of s/market fuel that former owners added.

I can see the top of my car in the car park...

What a load of cobblers...
Supermarkets don't make fuel, they buy it from Esso, and BP.... If you take a look at the pumps in detail you can often see who "owns" your supermarket petrol station.

Tescos all used to be BP.. dunno if they still are.

The reason it's cheaper is a lower markup by the stations themselves, thus lower profits. They make profits in-store, thus don't need profits from Fuel Sales...

There are no Manufacturers that will void your warrenty from using UK Supermarket fuel stations. This is mearly a myth, created by garage owners, so they can sell more fuel.
The fuel is identical... if it's BP then its BP.

The only difference is between brands such as BP, ESSO, Shell etc, where they add there own aditives. If Esso supply your Safeway, then it's the same fuel as the Esso station down the road...

It's true they don't make fuel, but I understand there are additives which are dispensed with the base fuel on delivery to the individual service stations.

So I suppose the thread should really be Supermarket fuel additives, versus branded.
(always assuming we're comparing same octane rated fuel)
