hi there, first post and its a problem. i searched the forum but didnt find anything.
i just past my test and dad gave me his old 1994 fiat Cinquecento. (y)
it runs fine yet the central locking keeps going mad. when i go to open it the locks go up down up down.. i keep getting scared that im going to leave the keys in the car and then for it to lock them inside. was wondering if anyone knows what the problem is.
the drivers door is a replacement as it has a diffrent lock to every other lock on the car.
any help be great!

Ahha!!
1stly, welcome!!

Right.. my old cinq did that... ANnoying isnt it!! It decides itself when it wants to lock and unlock..!!!
My suggestions... Do what i did.. give the car away.. get a better one ;)

Or just wait for an easy soloution posted by somone that knows what their talking about!!

On second thoughts....

Mine did it after i screwed around with the boot lock...

Check that first.. make sure its not loose atall...

If that isnt the problem.. get the door cards off and have a look at teh locking mechanism.. I think what it is is that the central locking switch isnt getting fully pressed.. making the car think its not locked proply.. then it decides to lock itself/unlock itself...

You got a haynes manual..? If not, ill scan u a copy of the stuff to do with central locking which may help u out a bit.. Explains all stuff that could be wrong ect in there...

Mine does it if you try and lock the car with the passenger door. Or if you open the car by pulling up the passenger stalk on the door.

Up down, up down, bing bong.

To fix it i unlock everything, open everything, lock the boot by hand, then the passenger, then the driver. Then unlock the driver. If fails, repeat.

It's just something i put up with... :bang:

its likely to be an earthing problem. unbolt the main earthing points around the car (see haynes manual) and give it a good cleanup and a sand down back to bare metal to make sure there is a good connection.

Might not solve the problem but its the best place to start! Other than that, poss a duff central locking relay or something.

Does it tend to lock/unlock when you do certain things? Eg. press the horn, doors lock, turn lights on, doors lock etc.

Mine used to lock the doors when you accelerated hard or beeped the horn lol. I just pretended it was a safety feature (y) :D

Simple, try locking it from the passenger side, if it doesn't do the lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock thing then it's the passenger locking solenoid that needs,
a- checking if the wiring is connected
b- checking if the earth is good (black wire IIRC screwed to a bit of the inside of the door)
c- taking out, throwing away and replacing.

If it still does the
lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock-lock-unlock
thing when you lock it from the passenger side then either
a- control unit it fubar'd
b- wiring is fubar'd
in which case you could replace the bits or just take the fuse out thus removing any chance of the keys getting locked in the car through anything other than stupidity.

could you scan me a copy of the stuff to do with central locking.
im with a problem on mine and maybe coul help me...
tanks...

I had a similar problem, although at the time I convinced myself it was 'cos the plastic thing around the lock barrel, & the big black bit in the door that links to central locking motor was screwed after being forced.

When I got a 2nd hand barrel with an intact plastic bit it seems fine - from what you guys are saying it makes me wonder if it is more likely that the wiring connection was at fault & wasn't quite plugged back in right 'cos I had the paint resprayed by a local panel place who did a sh*t job of putting back the inner door trim (also highly unimpressed with the guy 'cos the paint has flaked already around the repair after about 7 months).

yeah that being mine now doesnt do it very often anymore just sit there and ull hear it try and unlock or lock never actually suceeds tho!
or you'll be sitting there with engine running (the other day for example) and the door pins will start going up and down for no reason what so ever, also i found if you use force to unlock and close the drivers door then it works fine:D
cheers will

Its caused by the PCB in the central locking actuator getting dirty and corroded. Its inside the white plastic thing in the door. You can get it apart if you're careful, don't lose the two tiny ball bearings for the motor. Clean up the tracks on the board gently, give them a squirt of WD 40 and the central locking will behave itself.
