...as you can see I have followed the instructions left by many in the past as to removal of the outer skin to the gearknob - but now I'm lost.

What is the correct way to remove this plastic ball thing from the shaft?
 
well easy peasy.you should be able to fit any knob straight to the shaft once you get the plastic junk off

edit: job complete - looks a bit crap due to cheap gearknob, but will suffice until more funds are available :)
only thing I did notice was that my nice red leather gater doesn't fit quite how I wanted it to - so some alterations will need to be made there also...

you should have seen me hacking away at the end of my knob with a padsaw and a swiss army knife - I was on like MacGyver! heh heh

sheesh.... I don't think my knob has ever been in such high demand :p

okies, I took these this morning - then went to have a tooth pulled out, and for some reason, when I came back, decided to respray the top part of the knob in a more suitable shade of red (doesn't show up much in these photos but it was a dodgy metallic colour before)...

...I'm not gonna post an after pic I don't think, unless there is a major noticable difference when I take a pic - but we shall see when the laquer has gone off :D
