Hi,

My son is having problems changing gear as follows - any advice as to what the problem is would be gratefully received.

Thanks.

On wednesday the car's gears were really bad. Hard to get it in gear and when going from 1st to 2nd it 'shunted' into the gear rather than me sliding it into gear. I thought this might be due to overheating, so after a unscheduled trip to sainbury's it was OK.

This moring however after starting the engine it was back again. This time even worse.

I have noticed that I can put it in gear with the engine off, and if in gear with the handbrake off the car moves forward (as if the clutch is already past biting point). I though this might explain the problem, possible even with the clutch down the gears are not disengaged? However i can still stall the car (I tested this).

This is quite worrying especially if the car can do this with no stimulas (e.g. overheating) and the shunting into the next gear not v. good.

The problem is seen the most in 1st and 2nd. Going into 3rd is OK however going back is bad. I havn't been able to get it into 4th and reverse just creates griding of gears noise of epic proportions.

Any ideas?

Check this bit: underneath the dash on the passenger side

and also the clutch arm bushes inside the bellhousing could be worn, in which case a new clutch wouldn't fully cure it. Unfortunately you need the gearbox off to check them though.

Well the garage "did not have the part" and so the clutch was not fixed until yesterday - Tuesday. However it is now fixed - changing gear is now easy, I am told. I will get to see the Cinq on Friday so if there is any other info I will share it with you then.

I've been unlucky to have this happen to me, called the RAC out, sounds like clutch release bearing has gone. Took to RAC appd garage, charged 240 to fix it plus to fix the lovely handbrake.

I can see the top of my car in the car park...

hi, I HAVE THE SAME CAR WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. DOES IT MAKE A NOISE FROM UNDER THE BONNET? AND THEN THE NOISE GOES WHEN YOU PUT THE CLUTCH DOWN?
I TOOK MINE TO A GARAGE AND THEY THOUGHT IT COULD BE MY CLUTCH. SO I HAD THAT DONE THEN IT TURNT OUT THAT IT WAS MY GEAR BOX. HE TOLD ME ALL FIAT PUNTO'S HAVE THE SAME PROBLEMS, NOISEY GEAR BOXES. I TOLD HIM THAT WHEN I CHANGE GEARS IT MAKES A SOUND FROM THE GEARS INSIDE THE CAR, HE TOLD ME EVENTRULY I WILL NEED A NEW GEAR BOX, BUT THEY CAN LAST LIKE THAT FOR YEARS.

SO I THINK YOU WILL NEED A NEW GEAR BOX IN TIME.
I THINK IT WILL COST ABOUT £400 2 £500. FITTED.
WELL THATS WHAT MR CLUTCH IN ACTON TOLD ME.

GOOD LUCK :)

Get You Clutch Done At Mr Clutch In Acton, They Charged Me £148 Fitted :)
