Hi guys, I have had trouble free motoring in the Cinq for ages then ooops my speedo stopped working. Found it was the plastic drive at the bottom of the cable/gearbox gear. I have also had a grinding noise in first and second gear ever since I owned the car. Any way to the point. I decided that it was time to fit a new gearbox that I have purchased off here from a guy about 3 or 4 months ago.

I fitted it over the weekend and tonight finally finished it with the exception of filling up the completely empty box.

I put a litre in (2.4 litres needed in total) and decided to spin the near side front wheel and I noticed it was clunking very badly. i spun the off side wheel and it was perfect so I decided to start it up. Its currently on axle stands so there is no load on it. Oh dear it knocks really bad.

Does anyone have any ideas what they think this can be? Im thinking it is something to do with the nearside inboard drive shaft. Is it even possible to put that back wrong? i did not remove the outboard side as you dont need to remove it for a gearbox change as you know.

Any suggestions would be appreciated on what you think it may be.

Dont Have A Clue But A Weekend To Fit A Gearbox Is A Bit Long Isnt It ?

I have had a though and I shall remove the nearside drive shaft and run up the engine and put it into first gear and see if the knocking goes away. if it does I think that will indicate it is the nearside inner CV joint in no good. If it is still present then I think my replacement gearbox is dud.

Oh well if it is the car goes in the classifieds as spares or repair.

PS - Is it quiet in here or is my query a difficult one? Looks like a tumble weed moment LOL. :slayer:

I'd try what you've suggested first, could well be the inner cv joint, mine was making a nasty knocking noise before i changed my nearside inner joint. Give it a try and report back.(y)

Were you able to change just the inner CV?, A couple of local motor factors who I trust tell me I can only get the cmplete drive shaft as £70 total?
