Got the MOT on thurs so I had a good look over the car, everything ok so I left it in the garage. Come back to it and there's a little puddle of oil under the front :bang:

It's coming from the passenger side inner CV boot which is starting to split and weap oil. Any idea if it's an MOT fail? Only looses a tiny bit and obviously I'll change it soon, but don't have much time before the test. Is this hard to change the boot? I've not come accoss one like this where the boot isn't attached to the shaft. Do I need to undo the 4 bolts which seem to hold the inner boot in place, I'm not sure how it fits together at all.

Edit - forgot to say it's an 899 :)

You've got a far worse problem than an MOT failure, that oil leaking out is the gearbox oil, so it needs sorting sooner rather than later.

It should not be a fail for the MOT, IIRC outers are a failure, inners not.

I'm gonna fix it before the car gets used, went and bought a boot today. Just wanted to know if it'l pass or not as I don't have time to fix it before the test.

I rang the garage today and the inner CVs are a fail. Probably best to change them anyway since if they split properly then it's bye bye gearbox oil followed by bye bye gearbox. Seems a silly design really but I guess they last longer as they're not spinning all the time.

Any tips on changing the inner rubbers?

The shaft needs to come out, so prepare which part you are going to split. If you don't fancy playing with the ball joints, then the strut clamp bolts will need 'wire brush and dettol', or a set of new bolts and nuts.

my cinq passed an mot with a leaky shaft i think...... correct me if im wrong david...

Maybe I should just empty the box so it doesn't leak!

I can manage the outer end of the shaft as i've done it on other cars, just not sure on the inner end setup, do I need to undo the 4 bolts near the inner end? Then the shaft pulls out like on 'normal' shaft designs?
