Hi guys, my Cinq Sporting has developed an occasional grinding noise from what I think is the front drivers side:

The brakes are usually very quiet and it has only done it a few times. I can't reproduce it on demand, but it only happens at the end of a long period of braking, i.e. to a roundabout on a dual-carriageway from ~60mph. About mid-way through braking, the noise will start and will continue even when the brakes are released. It doesn't feel like the brakes are stuck on, and the noise will fade after a few seconds of driving off the brakes.

I would suspect worn pads/discs but wouldn't they make the noise every time I braked, and there would be no noise after the brakes are released?

What about a wheel bearing? but then I never get any other noises from the wheel...

Anyone got any ideas please?

James

Thanks, I'll definitely check them out.

I've heard the kind of noise that worn pads make when braking, but that was in a Fiesta and it did it every time I braked. Is it still possible then that the pads would only make this noise every so often when braking?

It can go from sometimes to often to ever. More likely to do this with the fist type caliper than the opposed piston ones, or so it seems.

Right then, I've only just been able to get round to looking at my brakes, and I can report that there seems to be ~10mm of material left on all of the pads and the discs look pretty good too. I haven't heard the noise since I started this thread, but it is unpredictable...

Thanks for your suggestions guys, but it must be something else I guess.

James
