Hi, my MOT's due next week for my Sei Sporting and my 3rd Brake Light (High level one) aint working. Will this cause the car to fail the MOT (the other 2 are fine)?
If so, how do you go about replacing it? Where can i get the new bulb from?
Cheers
Mikey

As a general rule, if somethings fitted to a car it has to work, but you may be lucky and the tester may not notice it.

As for a bulb, take it out and take a trip to Halfords or a local motor factors, they should help you get the right one.

Its a grey area, but as i said, the 'general' rule is, if somethings fitted it needs to work, ie if you don't have a windscreen on a sports car you don't need wipers or washers, but if you have them fitted they must work.

But I have found this info....

High level stop light I have a Peugeot 406 estate that has a factory fitted rear spoiler with integral high level stop light. At the recent MOT the light was very dim.The tester refused to pass it because of this. The regulations state that you require 2 stop lights, but if others are fitted and connected they must work properly. I therefore asked if the high level light could either be covered with tape or disconnected. The tester refused to consider either of these options. Only the Testers Guidance makes specific reference to High level stoplights - clarifying that they are to be regarded as one single unit and therefore only one LED need be working to render it passable. The MOT tester has taken the view that this means if there is a factory fitted unit it must work and it is not acceptable to disconnect it. I believe he is misinterpreting the regulations and guidance. It is my view that the regulations allow for this light to be disconnected. I would appreciate your view.

Answer: High level brake lamps are tested. These are usually mounted in spoilers or on the rear window. Since these lamps are over and above the current legal requirements they are treated more leniently. For example, if a high level lamp is not working and you say it is broken some testers will fail you but if you say it is disconnected then as far as the law is concerned it is not a lamp checking whether it is broken or disconnected is beyond testers ability unless they stripped the car down so they have to pass you

But if it was my car, I'd get it fixed whether its legally required for an MOT or not. Imagine if some idiot runs into the back of you and uses a faulty brake light to make it your fault, not something I would want to try out in court.
