After several months of been a real lazy b@$t@rd and having invested in one of those hosepipe thru flow long handled wash brushes to keep my New Orleans Blue Grande Punto clean i was shocked to see the state of the clear top coat (swirl mark city) when i was on a garage forcourt last week..

Anyhow after a scout around various Forums including Detailing world :worship: (That truely is the bible and then some if you have the time or dont go out in your car if its raining :p )

i read that AutoGlym Super Resin Polish was the stuff i needed to polish out the scratches which it has done to a large extent and i was more than impressed with the mirror like finish it gives.

Anyhow i also baught a bottle of Extra Gloss Protection and is it just me or do you find it dulls the paint work (not streaky) but just not as shiney as when i've finished with the Super resin Polish. I left it half an hour is this right i dont want to leave it on too long and find i cant remove it??

any tips?

BTW the brush has been binned and a Chinil (Spl) mit has now been baught along with a second bucket ...... thank god we arnt on a water meter :slayer: and one of those silicone rubber blades to dry the car to save rubbing with a shammy...

Thanks for that dave thats probably the answer but at this time of year trying to find a dry day when im not stuck at work might be tricky. I will give it another coat on saturday if it stays fine....

on another point they do a product called "ultra deep shine" is this any better than the Super Resin? or does it just act as a filler and let the scratches slowly reappear

saying that the Super resin fetched my faded red Mountain bike frame up like new and should make cleaning half of dalby forrest off it easyer ;)

I Spotted the Autoglym in Te$cos whilst i was shopping so got that,

a few quid cheaper than the local motor factors but i suppose they dont sell the range of other stuff (the phrase jack of all trades master of none springs to mind with the likes of Te$co) who try and erode the sales from the smaller independents till they close then jack the price up..)

Just a shame they dont do it like they do in France with their big Hyper markets you could almost rebuild your car with the amount of parts they stock.

thanks for the warning beast will i be binning that in a few months time??

i took to rinsing it under the hose every couple of passes we live in a hard water area and thaught a shammy could do similar damage..

I have a compressor and was thinking about blowing the car off but can see that "bright" idea that doing more harm than good if a bit of grit is drawn past the inlet filter and hits the car at 8 BAR.

Wouldn't say that, we have a few at work over 2 years old. Worked so hard they are rarely dry. Like most things depends how they are looked after. :D

Can't comment on the hard water and chamois tho. Only worked with the soft water around my way.:)

Autoglym Super Resin and Extra Gloss is a favourite of mine, they work wonderfully together, easily available and don't break the bank. I've got a whole raft of boutique waxes and stuff but the Autoglym stuff still does it for me. I've also used the Ultra Deep Shine stuff but to an extent Super Resin does just as good a job and is easier to use.

Drying I used a Hydrablade thing, which can be dangerous to the paint if you aren't careful and microfibres, mostly from Tesco at £1.27 and it comes up great.

I don't really go for the full de-swirl thing, can only really be done on a car a couple of times before you run the risk of permanent damage to the paintwork and much too high maintenance to try and avoid long term on an every day workhorse car. Swirl limitation and living with it is the way to go in my opinion.

Well done the entire car tonight again with the super resin polish and its lifted most of the fine swirls and looks a hell of a lot better than it did (y) just need to ultra deep shine it tomorrow (parked in dads garage over night) how many coats should i give it? the bottle says one or two applications is their a marked difference between giving it an extra coat?

Never got round to photo's:( should have done really but it never crossed my mind..

Took it out to Dalby forest today (100 mile round trip) to go mountain biking and it came home practicly spotless dispite the amount of mud from the car park the rock salt ect. I dont think the muck can stick to it, my mates car was well **** up. Still gave it a bath and a dry and had the added fun of trying to stay on 2 feet as the drive way froze as i washed it.. which was "fun"

might give it another coat next weekend if i get the chance.

You shouldnt need to de-swirl a car more than once or twice a year, the key is to use the correct wash technique to maintain the finish. You can polish a car more than once or twice, but you shouldnt have to regularly. If you do, then you need to look at what you're doing.

Ive had my met black stilo for 20ish months now and it hasnt got a single swirl mark on it. I regularly wash it with a megs lambswool mit, megs NXT car wash, hydra blade then sonus drying towel. Clay it once every 6 months using fine clay, Ive only ever given it one coat of Autoglym SRP, then a layer or 2 of Megs Tech wax and a layer of P21s Carnuba over the top. Leaves the finish absolutely beautiful!

Ive just invested in a porter cable as well which is fantastic! i love it...

Also, if after the EGP you have streaks then apply a little detailing spray such as Megs quik detailer or NXT speed detailer and buff off and the EGP protection will still be there but buffed up with spray (y)

Stylochris thanks for that.

as an update im well chuffed the car was mucky yesterday from all the muck from the snow and salt anyhow a quick rinse with the hose it all dropped off the car is almost self cleaning :D

having seen the state of a mates car im happy with the painwork now lets face it its only a car and only takes one t0$$p0t to run into you and all that hard work is for nothing:bang:

the paint on the new puntos (well new cars in general) is shocking!!!
I saw a brand new (had its dealership plates on being delivered somewhere) been driven, pulled up alongside it in my now 8yr old mk1 punto and mine was in MUCH better nick!! althogh I do spent countless days cleaning and caring for her, wheras the dealaship proberly just let the 16yr old monkey clean it with a brillo pad.

the paint on the audi and saab's my parents have at th mo (both 2001) are pretty shocking, bits flaking and chipped to hell (owned the audi from new, although its been to the moon about a dozen times now), wheras my dads 'play car' (always got something to mess with) an older bm compac is still minty.

yet another, they don't make them like they used to argument

half an hour! thats half an hour longer than it needs to be on. i always use it after a wax, and i find it does not make any difference to the shine, it is simply to seal the paintwork so the wax lasts longer, months longer.

maybe your problem is that polish is not as hard as wax so you are removing it when you use the paint sealant (Extra Gloss Protection). i never use polish, its crap, i only use a 100% carnauba wax. it must contain t1 or t2 or t2.5 carnauba wax, nothing else (well except the solvent obviously)

try applying the paint sealant to a small area at a time, and wipe it off before it has dried (literally a few seconds). paint sealant is not polish or wax, that is why it is so much like water. it does not require buffing, and you should not leave it on the paint to dry, simply wipe it on then wipe it off, doing both gently.

All you need is SRP and and EGP, job done.

srp (autoglym super resin polish for those who are wondering) does not last half as long as carnauba wax. and you get white stuff everywhere. and you cant use it on plastics. try carnauba wax, there's no white mess, its safe to use on every surface (inside and out!) and you'll wonder why on earth you ever used srp in the first place.

egp (autoglym extra gloss protection) is what i use after a wax. and then again after a couple of months (i call it my interim wax reconditioning).

than at 4 months do the wax and egp again.

the directions on the bottle say to wipe the EGP off lightly after 30-45mins (think i got the time right?) yet you fellas are saying it doesn't require wiping off at all?

Confusing.

I've got to say, i was surprised at it being so water like. I guess it dulled my car once it was on, but only very veyr slightly. Nothing major at all. I wiped it off lightly & it returned to it's shade after i'd put the polish on.
