My alloys seem to attract brake dust like mad and it sticks... Is there any wax people can recommend to protect them for a bit longer than them turning black on the first trip after washing?

Would normal wax/polish work?

Sorry if that sounds a bit dumb but I'm fed up of spending ages cleaning my car & alloys and them being dirty the second I drive anywhere!!

You must be braking too much then ;). Thare are alloy cleaning products by the likes of Meguairs etc ( Can't spell it!) that should provide a protective layer on your alloys, but they cannot magically banish brake dust!

Hehe, didn't expect brake dust to be banished, but was hoping for the cleanliness to last longer than 5 minutes once washed!!!

Try using a different type of brake pad one that creates less dust

i had EBC green stuff pads last time and they were pretty good at not leaving as much dust, this time i have Black diamond, the key word being 'Black' as thats how my wheels are left

Well I dont think you will be using those again Eh and the green stuff pads [EBC] do reduce the amount of dust which will help to keep your alloys cleaner and of course aid your braking efficiency :)

I normally use a standard carwash product with an alloy wheel brush follow up with a polish, I've been using Autoglym Super Resin Polish because I've got a 500ml bottle. Any polish followed by a wax would do. Does make cleaning easier and helps prevent damage.

Try Supawheels Protector, available from Supagard. This spray on resin will last for around 3 months per application. When it starts to wear off, simply use the supawheels cleaner, then re-apply the protector again. About a years supply with the kit, which normally costs abot £24.95. website address is www.supagard.com

You can get a product called "Wheel Wax" not sure how good it is I've never used it.
I tend to use a non-acid based cleaner (acid based will eat at your laquer if you're not carefull) then use what ever wax I have lying around.
I've found brake dust washes off really easily this way.
Be careful if you use a spray tyre dresser too as the residue will attract the brake dust.
I rub my tyre dresser in and clean the wheel after.

HI all this is my first post  and i had a problem whith dust on the front wheels and i found a cheap product that has done the job every time i use it is called CARPLAN WONDER WHEELS.(nothing to do with shela's wheels lol).and it a 6 times winner in the best buy catagory on auto express. it works and you get the brush with it but this can only be used on original wheels (wheels that have not been sprayed at home or laqured at home) and before i tried this i had tried other procucts and what have you but this works a treat and its cheap just £5 a bottle (1ltr)..i normaly do not endorse any product but this works for me and my wheels were well ""black"" ..you need gloves when using this stuf as it makes your hads ich like hell..but bloody good stuff and made my wheels look brand new again and again...found in boyes and other auto shops....and no i do now own the company..lol i am not victor kyam...and it last for about 10 uses out of one bottle as your first application stays good for ages..i recomend you given them a quick wash down before starting with water then apply the product with the brush then leave for 5 mins then hose off with water....done and dusted....PS..the pic shows 2 boxes of wonder whels as if you live near MACRO you can get 2 for just £7.50....so save even more....god i sound like a housewife..lol

I used to use wonder wheels then found out that it is acid based so stopped using it as eventually it will eat away at your laquer especially if you don't wash all of it off.
Good bit of info puntoinfronto but I wouldn't touch it personally.
I just clean my wheels every week so as not to let the brake dust build up and if washing the inside I'll use a non-acid based product.
Most times I just use auto-glym car shampoo.

Good advice CoupeDave. Acid based cleans are ok to start where the brakedust has built up and won't shift with normal methods. Use it sparingly and wash off with lots of water to ensure it doesn't keep working after you've finished. Once you've got them clean, you shouldn't need to use everytime, all you should need is a standard shampoo and a car polish to get anything slightly stuborn off. Wax or Seal the wheels afterwards as Ant1974 has said to add a layer of protection. In reality any wax or sealant would do, you don't necessarily need expensive boutique products to achieve long lasting results especially on wheels!

ok i know it is acid based as i mentioned gloves lol but yes i use it only when needed though and my alloys look ok to me and the laqured surface looks fine but yes it will one day eat the alloys but just 8 mins and all the wheels are done and most times it is just the front i think it is down to the removal of asbestos form the pads as years ago i did not get this crap on my wheels so the pads today are softer and they have no real substitute for asbestos but it was unsafe if you kneel down and blow the dust off your pads then breath in......like you are to do that lol ..i know some cars that have so much body filler in em if they knock anyone down they will die of asbestosis lo but you see my point?
