Hello All,

Now that winter is on its way I was wondering if washing the car is still the done thing or is it a waste of time and money? If washing the car is the done thing in the winter do you use different products?

Regards

Stephen

Having a second bucket to rinse the sponge in each time it has been in contact with the car helps. It keeps your main bucket clean and grit free. Also pre rinse the car to remove grit before rubbing a sponge all over it.

Absolutely the done thing - you don't want to have your car covered in salt all the time.

I tend to give my car a good clean and wax about now ready for the winter. Then during the cold snap I mostly just take it to the Tesco jet wash to clean off the worst of the muck (once a week or so). About once a month (weather permitting) I give it a full clean - i.e. snow foam, then hand wash with wash/wax 2 bucket method.

Surely its about now that we should be cleaning it and giving it a good coating of something to keep the muck & salt away.

Like a good coating of wd40 lol
1/2 inch of clear teflon might be useful.

Personally I tend to give my car one last big wash at the end of the summer, I always go camping at the end of the summer and always want my car to look its best for the long drive.

Then in the winter/autumn I tend to give up, I live down country lanes and the car will just instantly get muddy again then I have to take it on the motorway to work and it gets covered in salt.

When its gets seriously dirty I take it through the car wash, I dont do anything special for the winter. Never seems to have done my cars any harm in the past ;)

I tend to wash my car once a week, just jet wash it then use the 2 bucket method. Then polish it every few months.

Then 3 times a year ( just before winter, beggining of spring and in the middle of summer) i do a big wash - jet wash, snow foam, clay, polish, wax then sealer. Keeps the car lookin decent and prevent all the salt and winter time crap stickin to the paint as much lol.

You should use snow foam on all washes ideally so I've been told. Any particular reason you decide not to out of interest

Snow does a good job of cleaning in winter as well :D

As stated above, best to keep on top of the car during winter.

I tend to give the car a good going over at the beginning of winter, a couple coats of coli 915 will easily provide protection over the winter.

Just the usual 2bm and snowfoam rinse during the week.

I like to clean my car as often as i can during the winter. Like people have said, wax it to protect the bodywork and clean under the wheel arches. When its clean and shiny it stands out and looks good amongst the dirty cars around you! :D

A word of warning when winter washing

Ensure the water has a run away and the ground doesn't become an ice rink...

Water on the car and then cold weather overnight has seen my door locks and seal freeze solid

Not knowing what my current car is going to be like this year - i have no idea if my seals are good against freezing or not

Given that no one has replied to my other post i thought i might ask here.I have a 6mth old Fiat 500 and its in pretty clean order atm. I want to do the winter clean etc so i have bought a Autoglym Claybar kit and have Saturday to myself in a fully kitted workshop with all valeting facilities. One of the mechanics has offered to clear waxoil all the brake pipes etc underneath and i am going to attempt to clay the car.Anything else worth doing? Copper slip on the back of the pads type things?
