Lets face it its cold damp and horrid out there and no one in their right mind is going to want to spend hours outside cleaning the car only for it to be as bad again the next time you go out not everyone has a pressure washer so this wash is been done without one...........

Obviously at this time of year they start lathering the road with rock salt which coats the car obviously this is no good left on the car and is better rinsed off as often as possible That and it keeps your lights number plate and windows clear.....

so start with a dirty car...

I always start with some kind detergent pre-wash this could be either applied by a hose dispenser such as a Gilmour

a Super-Spray

super-sprayer.jpg

or even a pump up garden sprayer

even a watering can will do

I just use a cheap car shampoo im currently using Turtle wax big orange which is on offer in B&Q at £5 (or it was when i got some)

http://www.diy.com/nav/build/motori...mpid=4&tmad=c&ecamp=cse_go?CAWELAID=793778137

I use a metric "Glug" in the gilmour and top up with water the dirtier the car the more i put in .......

Next i start low down and cover the car working upwards in the solution and leave to soak for a few minutes

(whilst its soaking i refill the bottle and Fill a bucket with clean water and rinse the wheel arches out)

Next step is to rinse the car well with a fan jet of water to remove the worst of the soiling

So you now have a wet and slightly less dirty car

(notice that i didn't pre rinse the car with water this allows the shampoo to soak in and not be diluted any more by water still on the car)

As i said earlier i filled a bucket and refilled the soap dispenser

Rinse the wash mitt out thoroughly

and load it up with a blast of solution from your sprayer

then apply car shampoo to a section of the car eg the roof

then lightly wipe over with the wash mitt to remove the film of dirt

Then rinse the mitt out in the bucket and do another section leaving the dirty lower sections until last......

and use a separate wash mitt/ brush on the wheels

Once all been lathered up start to rinse from the top down using a flowing hose and "sheet" the water off the car.. (this works best on a waxed car) and in doing so it is possible to get the car 95% dry using water.............

6516042783_9d2c5591f2.jpg

let the car drip dry for a few minutes

then

Go over with a microfibre Drying towel or if you prefer a chamois

and there you go a clean car with minimal risk of scratching or swirling your paintwork

Only suggestions I would make are to try to use warm water (NOT HOT) as it will dissolve the soap better and do a better rinse. Also a chamois will strip off wax as you try to get the last bits or rinse water off the painted surfaces; the micro towel is much better. Be sure to dry the door jambs or the doors may freeze shut if left out overnight in freezing weather.

Be sure to rinse the undercarriage because the mag chloride used to melt road ice should be rinsed off at least weekly.

A chamois wont strip off wax as its chemically bonded to the clearcoat/ paint i use a MF DoDo supernatual Drying towel personally, But this was intended as a guide for those not into detailing and just want a clean car ;)

The chance with a chamois is the large flat surface of the leather can if the car is not 100% clean any dirt will be dragged across the surface of the paint inflicting scratches or Micromaring.

For cleaning the underside i use a lawn sprinkler when its too cold and horrid to crawl round on the driveway with the pressure washer (y)

this big orange better be good, i didn't take glasses so didn't realise until i got home you have to add 4 cap full to a bucket, that is a massive 80ml  does it know my buckets are 10-15 litres or will i need to double or triple the 4 cap full?

B&Q had a 3 for 2 on too so i had to buy more stuff even though i only went in for shampoo i couldn't miss out on a deal. I got rainx anti-fog as ive always wanted to try it, also got turtle wax platinum series leather cleaner & conditioner instead of Autoglym Leather Care Balm as that didnt say on the front that it cleaned too, couldnt read the back so was unsure if it needed the cleaner separate?

Its the cost of one local imegrant hand car wash here .. it makes bubbles it cleans rather well even I cant see the point in using really fancy boutique car shampoos in winter

Is that orange bug wash any good to stick in a foam lance then?

Ziggy

not really a foaming cleaner this guide was intended for those who dont have access to a pressure washer :)

I've searched on the turtle wax websites and still cant find out what size bucket they are referring too :(
i seen you mention big orange in a few threads chose this one as it will be winter again soon :( pissing down with rain now so no washing is being done

i just put a glug in a bucket cba measuring stuff like shampoo fair enough strong trade stuff such as G101 needs a bit of care but retail car shampoo meh

it rained most of the day so i never got around to using it in the end, i used the turtle wax platinum series leather cleaner & conditioner cloth was black after so looks like it removes dirt ok. ive put the anti fog stuff on the inside of windows have to wait to see if its rains tomorrow on a long drive to see if that works.

Rain X is good to start with

You really do need like 5x coats to get some life out of the repelling

it works well when its there, soon as it starts to wear off, its crap

My wipers as well didnt like the repellant at first, till i gave them a good clean, it was better but not 100%, made it bounce like hell!

its the inside stuff ive used today

@Ziggy122 always helps to DE-greese your windscreen before rain-x, you will find you wont need 5 layers :)

Yea - washing up liquid and good firm pad does it for me normally :)

But i found it dont last, hence why multi-ple coats

i think its because i end up using my wipers in really bad weather and it starts to physically wipe it off
