Greetings all. If your air conditioning switches feel like someone has spilled Coca Cola on them I’ve discovered a quick and cheap fix.
Use IPA or Isopropyl Alcohol to clean them. It removes the varnish that was applied at new and switches feel new and not sticky to the touch. You can clean the whole switch but don’t spray directly on the switch or on surrounding trim, just onto a microfibre cloth, and careful as it will remove the white surrounding icons also.
However it won’t remove the MONO or AUTO icons on your switches but it will change them from black to grey.

That's good to know, I did worry about removing the text on the dials. For now, the rubberised plastic on my heating controls is in tact. The same couldn't be said about the volume control on the stereo though. That perished within a few years

That volume knob simply pulls off.
You can remove it and underneath it you will find the shaft of a potentiometer.

There are multiple replacements available.

I didn't even need to pull it off. Just soaked some kitchen towel with a bit of IPA and it was gone :)
