Hello all,

I recently bought a fiat bravo 1.4 multi air and have been loving it. Quite the upgrade from my 1.2 Corsa.

Anyways ever since I had the car I've always heard a sort of rattle when slowing down between 2-1.5 thousand revs. Sounds like the exhaust manifold shielding was rubbing against the manifold, as this this was only a small issue I left it for a little while.. big mistake.

I decided to take it to a garage who have always been really good to me and look after your car. They called up and said it's the wastegate actuator arm that's rattling on the turbo side, and that to fix this they need to buy a whole new turbo unit at a cost of 1.4 grand including installation cost.

Is this the best option? I always thought you could just change the rod and actuator out without having to get a whole new turbo? I'm taking the car back to the dealership on Monday who will also have a look as they aren't very happy with paying that much to fix the problem.

Is there anything I can try to fix it? As I really can't be taking the time off work as the dealers about 4 hours away and I need the car for work. I've done some stuff with cars before. Such as replacing the timing chain and suspension on my old corsa so I'm not too bad with my hands.

Any help would be great! Cheers

Post your VIN, i'll give you the turbo part code... you'll find it on ebay much much cheaper.

The original turbo: 55228036 this replaced: 55228036 in 2011. Later there were new turbos introduced in 2013: 55228036,55238190,55248412.
If i remember correctly these turbos suffered from some major cracking problems; cracking around the wategate flap.
BUT that problem comes with no turbo boost...so performance is drastically affected.
How is the performance on your car?

They are all for the same engine (same power)... so i think they will all fit.
for ~450-900euro you will be able to find a new one on ebay.

For 1450 euro you can get an entire kit for you engine, that has the cam, the injector, turbo adapters, exhaust downpipe... exuding the intercooler and the tune, it's pretty much everything you'd need to get the car to 250 hp:

Before you buy anything take a look at this:
same engine, same turbo:

----- this will also cause wastegate rattle.

Thanks for all this info man! I'll have a look at it this weekend and see if this will fix it.
Although the car has always done this since I've had it, it does feel like the turbo kicks in at 2000 revs and then doesn't seem to boost anymore after 4000 revs. Like it's limiting itself at 4000 revs.

I'll keep you updated on my findings!

Cheers

Had a look at the car today and I've shortened the actuator rod as the video says (only by 3 millimeters though) and voilà! The rattle is gone. The actual wastegate arm had quite a bit of lateral play but shortening the rod has made that less noticeable. The car is finally perfect! Thankyou again with your help!
