Hi. Can anyone tell me where the correct position is for the camshaft sprocket timing mark on the 1.6 mjt 105 bhp engine? All I've seen so far is the 1.9 and 2.0 diagrams which, incidentally, show the exhaust cam locked, whereas mine has the inlet cam locked as per the Alfa 1.6mjt Mito diagram in autodata (as the exhaust cam is obscured by the turbo valve), but all show the camshaft sprocket mark at 1-0-clock, mine is definitely at 3-o-clock? bottom crankshaft tool is in position.

Ok. So the nearest thing I can find to it is the 2.0cdti Insignia engine. That has the camshaft sprocket at 3-o-clock, but again uses the exhaust camshaft locking tool. I've locked the inlet camshaft and as I said earlier the crank pulley is at TDC using the tool I bought for the 1.9 JTD with a slight mod to the casing pin. Put the new belt on and all the marks on the belt aligned with the pulley/sprocket marks so I've gone with that. rotated twice, all ok.

You don't have any marking on the 1.6? I have the 1.9mjt and I changed the timing belt, water pump and bearings. Whiteout special lokingtool. Can't you post a picture of the problem?

I've just replaced timing belt on my 1.6mjet as ade739 said there are no reference marks on the engine side (only on the cam sprocket and crank pulley). But with the tools below you don't need references and you'll have a more accurate alignment. The references on cam sprocket and crank pulley are useful to align the 3 timing belt white markings and fuel pump sprocket mark (not sure if it needs to be synced with the others but I did). If you remove the fuel filter to get better access you might have issue with the car engine switching off after a few miles with "check engine" fault. You will need to reset the code as the engine will run erratically until you reset (via OBD).
