Technical Cambelt Snap

Technical Cambelt Snap

It was a Gates belt and pump kit, so not a crappy one.

I've come to terms with it now. Just one of those things. Hopefully I'll get another 40k miles out of it without any major issues.
So Gates pumps in both cases ?

Hi, I’ve just had a very similar experience to Mark, and I would appreciate peoples comments on the next course of action with my car. Bravo 150 sport -
146,000 miles. Cam belt has snapped due to seized water pump. I was driving approximately 30 miles an hour when the engine cut out I just coasted to the side of the road. Foolishly tried to turn the engine over once. Now with a garage and my options are -

A £350 to fit a new Cambelt set and water pump to see if it will run.
B £500 take the head off check for bent valves
C say goodbye to the car and look for another one.

I was tempted to try option A until the garage called me back and advised the pump has gone as well. Should I just scrap the car and look for another? Comments welcome thanks

t-jet? or diesel?

If it's the t-jet, just find a small garage and have them do it... should be only slightly more expensive than changing a head-gasket on a 1.2 16v (the t-jet and 1.2 16v are extremely similar)

On the diesel...i've got no idea.

They said the work was 9 hours labour, it may have included some other tests but its a significant sum

The diesel motor would need parts..
As Nigel suggests..checking valve clarances are in spec. Could point to no need for a head off...just change damaged follwers etc that are more readily accessed.

Petrol motor.. similar advice.. but is the 150 derv only..?

This subject always makes me nervous!! I have a 1.9 Multijet (2007), with only 27K miles!!! --- a great car and drive like new but I have no history of timing belt change - for my peace of mind, last summers, I took off few engine covers, and had a good look at the belt (as far as I could see), and the belt looked fine - no cracks and feels not hardened at all- so, I decided to to keep it as is......I know not an ideal decision but the hassle of getting it replaced & Quality of parts etc, and lack of trust in local indys, (dealer prices being so extortionists), I am just taking my chances......but yea always in back of my mind what if the belt snaps one day!:slayer:
