For the second time in two days, the light orange immobiliser light on the dashboard has stayed illuminated (or re illuminated, i've not really paid attention) after a cold crank. The engine starts fine, although has taken longer to catch in the extreme cold we've had in the last week or so. The cars manual says that if the light is on whilst driving, the system is running a self test, potentially from a voltage drop.

What are the odds that this recent cold weather has all but finished off the cars battery - it doesn't tend to get much of a run when i'm working at base - 10 mile round trips at most tbh. It'll be getting a few decent runs next week though

So, is this little orange light a signal of impending doom - should I bite the bullet and replace the battery now, or hold out for a while longer?

Another possible symptom parking at home this evening, was the doors unlocked as soon as the engine powered down; i've no idea if this is related, or more random fiat behaviour.

The battery could well be as old as the car (2008 model).

I stuck a multimeter across the battery this morning (didn't start the car, no need to) - and it's sat at 14.4V cold.

Check your multimeter and make measurment again with engine at idle and then with engine off.

Yes, I also thought that was stupidly high.

I intend to borrow a more accurate one from work, then run the test again with AUX power on.

I will also test the system with the engine running next time I've got a chance to take the car out afterwards.

Update - the known good multimeter from work read at ~11.98V unloaded, dropping to 11.8 with AUX power on. My multimeter, with a juicy new battery in it now reads ~12.15V unloaded.

Time for a new battery me thinks.

Was that with engine running?

Voltage is 13.9->14.1V with the engine running.

After a very sluggish start this AM I fitted a new battery. Will see how it goes.
