cheers

Why does your car make a police siren sound when accelerating ? I'm totally confused

Listen to a Vauxhall Astra 1.9 CDTI SRI and a Vectra 1.9 CDTI SRI.

They use the same engine as my Stilo multijet - 150hp.
The turbo makes a howl - like that noise an Owl makes on a dark night - woooo... woooo... it can sound like a police siren.

My stilo does it - i don't think there is anything wrong with the turbo... it has done this since i got it (nearly 4 months ago) and I have driven over 10 astra's and vectra's and they all did it.

I will hopefully be upgrading the turbo later on this year, I want a hybrid one making out of the same model turbo i currently have, so I will be buying one then having it sent off to have it rebuilt, balanced and converted - im not doing it to gain big increases as such - i just want it to be safe, reliable and smoother :)

so.. either turbo flutter or turbo wheels are touching.

The flutter can occur if the wastegate solenoid is connected wrong ( it has 3 hoses), or if it's not connected-electrically, or if it's gone bad.

The whistling / whining turbo is caused by chipped turbo blades. Turbo's turn at 100,000 to 140,000rpm and the slightest chink in the edge of a tubo blade will often create this siren effect.. It should not affect performance or reliability unless a blade breaks off completely. I am now very careful about air cleaner changes. The filter chamber ad outlet pipes must be scruplously clean. ALWAYS vacuum these carefully before fitting new filter. My Bravo turbo inlet pipe was held on by an appalling hose clip that failed and was clearly allowing air around the inlet side of the turbo until replaced recently with a proper jubilee clip. Unfortunately to get a quiet turbo you need a reconditioned unit.

I gathered this might be a factor but... if the turbo is not spinning over its limit but producing enough boost... all is ok, within tolerances.

Hence me wanting to have one same model as mine overhauled and balanced... i have a spare turbo from a 100k non runner multijet 150 but... a big but... looks like a bird strike has happened in the turbo. Blades are chewed and twisted :(
