General 1.9 120 5 speed gearbox important check

**IMPORTANT** Ensure that rain water does not drip down past the join in the small removable cover situated above the brake fluid reservoir onto the gearbox (test by pouring some water over windscreen and allow to flow through scuttle panel).
I have recently emptied over 4.5 litres of watery oil from my recently bought 1.9jtd 120 5 speed gearbox (it should have 1.7 litres in it), when I removed the dipstick oil poured out.
There is a rubber boot over the gearbox selector shaft which was perished and allowed the water to pass through the grease seal into the gearbox.
After several flushes I have hopefully caught it before any major damage was done to the gearbox but this simple check could save you the cost of a new gearbox.
I have now used sealant on the join to stop the leak.
I dont know if this only affects the 5 speed gearbox.

Hi,

you fill the gearbox oil via the dipstick hole which is located at the rear of the gearbox.
use a length of hose attached to a funnel.
