I've been advised to blank of the EGR valve to try an eliminate whether it's at fault. Basically put it inbetween the EGR and the engine I've ordered a blanking plate like this

Surely it won't fit back on due to the protruding valve. Will it mean removing the EGR all together?

Yes you have to remove it all together.
