Hello Bravo Owners,

I need your knowledge and advice in relation to gearbox / transmission oil change.

My car is suffering from stiffness in the 2nd and 3rd gear when cold. Once the engine and transmission has warmed up, the gearshift are lighter, but still not perfect. I have therefore considered to change the oil to a fully synthetic product. Which recommendations do you have?

The type of my vechicle is:

Model: Fiat Bravo 1,4 T-Jet, 120HP
Year: August 2010

I have looked at these different oils:

Redline MT90 (75w90, GL-4) (Brookfield Viscosity @ -40°C: 320)
Redline MT85 (75w85, GL-4) (Brookfield Viscosity @ -40°C: 160)
Mobil Mobilube 1 SHC (75W-90, GL-4 & GL-5) ((Brookfield Viscosity @ -40°C: 66)

These oils have different "Brookfield Viscosity" values, so which ones seems better in cold conditions?

Note - I am using Mobile Mobilube 1 SHC right not, and I feel no improvements in the gearshifts for 2nd and 3rd gear when cold!

I hope that you can provide me some recommendations. Thanks a lot :)

Are there anyone here that might be able to help with a little advice?

Thanks a lot :)

Can't say about the climate part, but I cannot recommend enough Redline. Made massive difference to my Tjet150's gearbox, which was in perfect condition to begin with.

Hi Lyubohar,

Thank you for your reply.

What kid of Redline transmission oil are you using for your Bravo? and how many bottles would I need?

Is the gearbox the same in Fiat Bravo 1.4 120HP and 150HP?

I can tell you that the shifting has become very notchy when cold with the Mobil "Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90". For me this oil is NOT and improvement compared to the previous oil, recommended by Fiat:
- TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX

Brian

I think I bought 3 bottles and used 2 + some of the third one. There is a step-by-step instruction on gearbox oil change here on the forums, I suggest you find it and follow the steps.

If you have a 6-speed transmission, then it's the same - M32.

Temperatures here drop to minus 10 in the winter and my gearbox feels very light and easy to change gears even at that temperature.

Hello Bravo-owners,

It's time for an update regarding the change of gearbox oil.

Back in November 2015 I changed to Mobil "Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90", but this was a huge disappointment, as the shifts became even more stiff and notchy when cold (around 0 degrees Celsius) . This oil actually turned out to be a lot worse for my gearbox than the original FIAT oil (Selenia TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX).

I later followed the advice from 'lyubohar' and bought 2 liters of Redline MT-85 oil.

Before changing the oil, I did the following:
1. Drained the gearbox for Mobil "Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90" (GL-4/GL-5 type) when gearbox was warmed up
2. Topped up the gearbox with my old TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX oil (GL-4 type)
3. Took the car for a 20 km spin again to rinse/flush the gearbox with the old TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX oil (GL-4 type). The purpose was to remove a much of the (NOTE - Some GL-4/GL-5 transmission oils can contain sulfides that can damage brass synchros").
4. Drained the gearbox for the TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX oil, and topped op with the REDLINE MT-85 oil.

Result after first 80km of driving:
- No stiff or notchy gear change under freezing point (-3 degree Celsius)
- Perfect synchronization in gear change from 1st to 2nd gear
- General very smooth gear change in all gears
- No additional mechanical noise

Additional feedback:

Mobil "Mobilube 1 SHC 75W-90" vs. Selenia TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX:
Selenia TUTELA provides more smooth gear changes, but can still be stiff during cold periods. Synchronization in 1st to 2nd is still not perfect with the Selenia oil (typical issue with the M32 gearboxes!!)

TUTELA TRANSMISSION MATRYX vs. Redline MT-85:
Redline gives indeed perfect synchronization, as I don't experience any notchy, stiff or crunchy gear change from 1st to 2nd gear. Stiff gear change has disappeared during cold periods +5 down to -3 degree Celsius)

I would also like to recommend the REDLINE MT-85 :slayer:
