Hey!

I have a 57 plate Fiat Bravo 150.

It drive completely fine until I get to about 55 mpg and then it shakes. I can feeling it the steering wheel, and passengers feel it too. When I take my foot off the accelerator the vibrating stops. Also tends to stop when i get to around 70mph.

I had new front tires and had them balance so pretty sure thats ok.

wheel balance ( all 4 ) is the obvious/ easy thing, :)
wheel as well as tyre balance..;)

out of balance engine flywheel. or counterbalancer could also do it.., as you don't generally hold a steady high-ish RPM in the lower gears,

my money is still on a wheel or tyre imbalance--those speeds are also typical of it ,

swap wheels front to rear.. look for a difference.. (y)

I will get them redone, but kwik fit was supposed to have done them when they did the tyres.

But... If it was shaking before I had new tyres and it's now still shaking, does that rule out balancing?

Lead (or whatever metal they use for balancing) can get thrown off the wheels at speed so you may find its just a case of getting them rebalanced. Thats pretty much guaranteed to be the cause of your problems I would think.

I've had this problem twice before and checked the wheels and alll that low cost stuff first then first time found the drive shaft was the problem and second time was one of the front wheels was a wee bit loose and this was fixed by changing the steering arm.

Turns out it was the balancing. Even though I took it to kwik fit to do the 2 front tyres and balance or 4 only 6 days ago! Took it to a place today and they said all 4 were way off!

Oh no! I spoke too soon. Although the garage said the balancing on all 4 tyre were out and have now fixed them, I still get a shake. I was away so didn't really drive it much, but the shake is as bad as ever. Can feel it right in the steering wheel.

When I had it MOT'd a few months ago they said i had a sicky rear caliper, but they greased it and said it was functioning ok. Could this cause it?

Got another garage to take a look and they said that both the front tyres were badly buckled. They have changed the fronts to the backs and there is some improvement. I guess I need to change the wheels themselves.

Can anyone recommend anywhere?!

Just out of interest. If the damaged wheel rims are now on the back, should I still feel the vibration in the wheel? Managed to find some rims for £40, so at leat it wont be too expensive.

Should still sort of feel a shaking, its strange when from the rear, had it once on my Bravo last winter when I got mud stuck on the inside of the rear wheels.

I'm gonna but the wheels I think. Just can't work out why it would only vibrate on acceleration

it vibrates all the time but you feel it more under acceleration because the engine is "more engaged" to the wheels and maybe some resonating with the engine vibrations itself ... so you feel more of a vibration.
when you are not accelerating or you are under engine braking the engine and gearbox through their mounts soak up a lot of he vibration; under acceleration the mounts are already compressed so they cannot absorb as much of the vibration.

Maybe you can find someone on the forum that lives somewhat close to you that you can swap wheels with for 1 day so you can test it thoroughly; this way you would know if it's the wheels.
