Just happened tonight so can't check until morning. But a number of things happened tonight. Its a bravo 1.9mjet 120. Got in car and heard a loud metal ping! It sounded exactly like when my spring went last year. Also coincidentally the check engine light has come on. I thought I'd risk trying to get home after looking at manual. Regarding the ping, initially car felt fine. Not like spring has gone.
So anyway driving home and I hear something like a piece of metal falling from car! So decided to turn back and go to my dads. Another piece of metal falls from car! Got back to my dads without anything else falling...phew!
He's going to have a look in the light in the morning so I've took his focus home.

I had my spring replaced and the computer put on to see about the check engine light. Garage says it's something to do with the air flow meter. But he is quoting me £2-250 which is kind of expensive as you can get them off shop4parts for less than £100.
Has anyone replaced one themselves? Also, is it worth cleaning it first before I buy a new one? Is the EGR valve difficult to get to as I may as well take this out and clean it while I'm in there.
Thanks.:p

Look into the engine bay from the front. Look straight down on your right hand side below the battery. The MAF sensor is located on the pipe coming from the air box. It has an electrical connection on top and is fitted inline on the pipe. Simply unplug, loosen the jubilee clip and remove the two bolts fixing it to the air box. It can then be slipped out. It is quite tight but fairly easy to do.

As for cleaning it, its a sealed unit and the sensors themselves are located well inside the plastic casing. It is therefore very difficult to clean them effectively.

Have a look around on ebay for a new replacement Bosch part. I managed to get one from France for £75 delivered.

The EGR valve is at the top of the engine and looks like this:

Cleaning or replacement is fairly straight forward. Search on this forum for a guide or this might help - http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa...ix-the-egr-valve-1-9jtd-pdf-instructions.html

Good luck

Thanks for the info. Amazing help! Ill take a look at it tomorrow. :)

Ok, so I remembered I had one of those OBD tools that I bought ages ago for the GP I had. Had a root around and found it and popped it on.

Came up with Error P0401 which is the EGR error. Also when I put the OBD tool on it also came up with an airbag error that has stayed on. I erased the P0401 error to see if it comes back on later.

So looks like I'm going to have a go at cleaning the EGR first.

Thanks.

So no codes relating to MAF (air flow) sensor then?

Just be aware some of those handheld OBD devices do not always show all codes. Best thing is MultiECUScan on your laptop and the relevant lead. I got a lead for about £7.00 on ebay and it works a treat. The software is free.

If P0401 comes back perhaps clean the EGR Valve. If it comes back after that it is probably a replacement job as the solenoid may have ceased/stopped working. When buying an EGR valve bear in mind that they are the same part on Vauxhalls and Saab's with the same engine. I replaced mine with a Saab part (£50-60) and it worked great. The part is exactly the same other than the electrical connection points downwards instead of backwards. The wiring reaches the plug fine though without any messing about.

If you want to check if the EGR solenoid is working you can activate it from MultiECUScan and listen for a change in the engine sound.

If this keeps P0401 from coming back but you still get the check engine light, it's either your airbag fault or the code reader is not displaying all codes (in which case garage may be correct when talking about the MAF sensor).

I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it. :)

It is a handheld one that I got quite a while ago. Could do with updating. Im going to order one of those cables off ebay and get the software.

Thanks!

Thanks Rigby, Ill try that later.

That cable I ordered yesterday came today! Superfast delivery from Ebay.

Working later tonight and all day tomorrow but I'll probably rig up the laptop on Sunday and give it a whirl.

Thanks again.

Didnt get chance this weekend, and ive been looking after my young daughter Mon/Tues. Hopefully I'll get the software installed on the lappy tonight and give it a go tomorrow.

Thanks for asking though. :)

I managed to get the multiecuscan connected and tested tonight. I tried to activate the solenoid from the program but it failed. So looks like it's a new egr valve! Ill be ordering one tomorrow. :D thanks again to all. :-D

Just a quick update.

Got the new EGR valve fitted and it has cleared the fault, picking up a hell of a lot better under 2000rpm.

One thing though, since replacing the EGR I am now receiving a check glow plugs error on the dash every cold start (morning, evening going home)

If I leave the error to pass then it starts up no problem. If I try before the error has passed you get the noise like its struggling to start.

Could it be related to the EGR replacement or just a massive coincidence? Also could it be anything else other than the glow plugs that could be causing the fault?

Thanks!

Hehe, sorted it. It was just a 50amp fuse that wanted replacing by the looks of it. Changed it and its all well at the moment. F05 50amp fuse next to the battery for reference if anyone needs it.

Thats interesting. I don't get a warning, however I always need to wait for the little glow plug light on the dash to go out before attempting to start the car otherwise it just turns over. I thought this was a thing of the past with diesels. Other modern diesels I have driven start with a quick turn of the key.
