I've been bugged with a few problems for a while now, most of which have nearly been sorted. (y)

I still think I'm suffering for a lack of power in the lower RPM range.

For example when pulling off in 1st gear at normal throttle the car is really sluggish up until about 1700rpm where there is a big increase in torque and then a surge of power at 2300rpm

The same thing goes when changing up through all gears, for example after a gear change the revs drop back down to 1500rpm so when I'm not booting it for example.

Now I'm trying to work out if this is completely normal and how the car has always driven and its all in my head and my judgement has become clouded over time driving lots of newer and faster cars for work or if indeed there is a problem.
I've done so much research into this and lots of people say its just a trait of this engine

Looking at the official power graph which I'm sure some will find interesting, what I'm experiencing kind of make sense and looks technically right.
60BHP/163 lb-ft @ 1500rpm
87BHP/225 lb-ft @ 2000rpm
Saying this the engine should have delivered 2/3rd of torque by 1500rpm which just doesn't feel like the case since its virtually dead until 1500rpm.

I've cleaned my MAF and this helped a little, however if I completely disconnect it and the performance improves this would likely mean a faulty MAF however if I did this would the EML turn off once I reconnected it or would I have to plug it into diagnostics to wipe the light and code
£150 for a new MAF is a lot on just a punt.
I also cleaned the MAP but thinking replacing this too

What is everyone else's thoughts.
Cheers
Si

Also I get this strange quick noise when accelerating at about 2600RPM -

Did you clean your EGR valve?

Yes Tad I had it fail on me in December, so had it replaced.

Recently took it apart, cleaned it up and fit a restrictor plate, this also helped a lot but I did at the same time as cleaning the MAF so not sure which gave the best results, should have done one at a time so I knew haha

We have delta with the 2.0 multijet and it s also flat below about 1700rpm and especially so when cold, at higher speed it's fine, can be a bit difficult at busy junctions especially as the hill holder only works inconsistently. It's not bad enough to say its faulty but is a bit annoying it has been like it since we bought it and only 15k on clock now with no errors on multiecuscan so I figure they are all like it (?) when above 2k it goes like stink

to get the power you get from the 1.9 and newer 2.0 JTD's you need a large turbo. These are totally inefficient until you get to 1.5-3k revs.

I suspect this is normal, well mine has always been slow until 1.5k since new. (Unless its in 1st that is....)

Ours is sluggish even in first takes a bit of thought to get the clutch/rev coordination something like right but you do get used to it

My 2.0 Multijet is just the same. Nothing happens until you hit 2000rpm, then it just comes alive. I had a tuning box installed on my previous MiTo 1.6JTD which did the same prior to having the box. Luckily I don't have the car now, it wasn't a good idea having the box on I think mainly due to the car having a DPF. The light was always coming on and the car often smoked like a tractor at motorway speeds. I removed it straight away when it started this. One thing it did do whilst installed was improve power below 2000rpm however this came at a cost. The car shuddered badly under full acceleration which really didn't sound healthy and must have been putting strain on the gearbox and clutch I'm guessing?

It was problem free after removing the box however I don't know the long term effects if any.

I kind of figured it is a fuelling issue and related to the dpf, it does rather make me wonder about both tuning boxes and remaps as both must increase fuelling and therefore smoke with probable increased dpf issues.

Cheers guys this kind of puts my mind at rest, maybe I am just getting used to driving a little more heavy footed lately and expecting more. My weekly trip fuel consumption sits at about 46mpg now, it uses to be around 49 on the same weekley journeys. What about de MAFing would I throw a fault code which needs to be reset if I unplugged it to see if it needs replacing?

I was considering a remap/box luckily the Sport has no DPF which is pure luck as I didn't know this at the time of buying it. I'd have probably taken it off by now though if it did. It's a shame all these extra things to lower emmisions PDFs EGRs etc just cause more problems on already low polluting cars. I'd rather pay more in tax then the hassle of getting them sorted at a garage haha

My daughters partner has a delta with the 1910 twin turbo unit (190hp) and even with the smaller turbos he says it is a bit flat at low revs, probably not quite so flat as the single turbo units though

So your not going to believe this.
For about 5 months now I've been using Millers Diesel Power Ecomax, the last few fill ups I'd lapsed putting any in though. This occurred to me the other night, so I went ahead and put some in and done a 70mile trip today and now the car really feels better... I'm pretty sure it's the extra cetane numbers and not a placebo, and no I don't work for Millers Oils haha but I am pleased to have a little more poke back.

I used this stuff all the time in my bravo. Worked wonders. My dad bought a giant 5l can of it for our cars :)

Honestly its amazing inst it, I''ve done my usual commute to work today with the stuff back in my tank and its such a difference to last week, can't believe I didn't think about it.
I only use ASDA fuel since its the cheapest and across the road from me, even topped up with additive its still cheaper and probably better then premium diesel.
I'm thinking of getting the 5L tank too, Camskill have it for £59.99 + £6.95 for delivery which works out well cheaper than single 500ml bottles. However 5L will dilute to whopping 5000litres...still for the long term performance increase its well worth it!

:yuck: :bang: (n) and :yuck: again

I guess it's cheap for a reason, although I guess it has to conform to UK standards none the less, I'll just keep adding Additive, still works out cheaper and a lot more convenient. It would be interesting to see if anyone else notices such performance loss with supermarket fuel and then compare difference with additive... Hummmm

I use supermarket fuel and other non Shell/BP etc stations 9/10 and can't tell any performance or economy drop even when compared with BP Ultimate Diesel. Additives are a waste of money IMO, only useful if your car has a fuel problem in the first place.

I wish I could agree with you but in my case there is a noticeable difference.

Recently on a TV show I work on we ran a car on a dyno then added a bottle of a RedEx petrol additive and ran it through a the whole tank for a week. Same Dyno same car, same fuel but this time with a 4 bhp increase, this was simply a cleaner with no extra octane boost... we were all genuinely surprised.
