Hey guys (again!)

OK, so the other day I did a long journey of 500 miles (in 2 days). I have noticed that the past few days there is a knocking/winding sound coming from what I think is the engine. it sounds like a very light metal knocking against another light metal, or maybe a belt that is slightly loose making something shake. I can't hear it from the outside, only the inside.

Any ideas?

Difficult to diagnose remotely. Suggest start by eliminating the obvious.
My first check would be to turn up the speed of the heater fan, just to check nothing has fallen down a vent . I once had a leaf in the intake and it took me ages to identify it was the source of an annoying sound.
Look at the condition of the belts for the auxillary and cambelt to see no damage is present.

Thanks freebo! Had a good listen and look and its coming from the alternator belt pulleys or the cambelts, not sure which. Could it be the water pump goin or the alternator belt or pulley tensioner?

Or the air con? As u can hear it from both sides of the car, sounds like its comin from behind the centre console

Dan , it could be any or all of those .
Tensioners, when on the wane, usually make a whistling sound in my experience.
I have had a waterpump (Conti) which failed early and made a bearing type noise.
If the aircon is switched off and you still have the noise , then its not the aircon.
My bravo has a noisy tensioner on the auxilliary belt but it doesn't knock, just a bearing noise at about 1200 rpm.
If you are not the first owner check the auxilliary belt condition as these tend to get overlooked. They only cost a few pounds to replace. (I presume the cambelt has been replaced if it was due ?)

Hi there,

Thanks for the informative reply!

The cambelt has not been changed. My car is 6 years old and has done 44000 miles. Perhaps it is due??

Yes, the noise is more like a bearing noise. Where abouts is the auxilliary belt?

This morning, I could not notice the noise quite as much, which is a good sign! The vehicle has just been serviced, so maybe because the engine is a bit quieter I can hear more things that I could not hear before?

Drive directly to garage, Do not pass GO, Pay £300 Bill

At 6 years you are living on borrowed time. Get the cambelt changed, along with water pump and tensioners, and do it NOW

Yes. Now we know that the cambelt has not been changed ! I agree with neil , get it changed, as he suggests .

Guys he has been told multiple times he needs to get it done..

i cant say anything on cambelts, I have had the parts in the boot for a year now, not had the time or money to get them fitted, although moving job/house/country didnt help that :D

im on 66K and well pushing it and asking for trouble so its booked in to have those parts fitted, Id advise anything untoward dont chance it, its hard getting time sometimes, but its not worth a 2K bill

Haha yeah sorry!

Are our cars prone to the cam belts going or not??

I think the frustration of the people trying to help you here is flying over your head?

Every car that has a cam belt needs to have it replaced on a regular basis or its engine will literally destroy itself when it ruptures. (it has nothing to do with "our cars")

Understand that once and for all, it's for your own good.

:yeahthat:
danthewam, I think the knocking noise you are hearing is the sound of people trying to bang some sense into you. Wake up and smell the coffee.

The sound you don't want to hear is tinkle tinkle tinkle as 16 vales get intimately acquainted with 4 pistons. It happened to me on a Rover 820, and not through lack of servicing. Fortunately Rover paid for the repair. The timing belt tensioner "dropped off" because the securing bolts broke! I later found out there were 3 different patterns for the bolts on 820 engines - a known weakness.

To be honest, ive had enough of things always been wrong on my car. Ok, i know that the cambelt is due, blah blah, but its just one thin after the other. When i bought it it was 5 years old and had 34000 miles onit. A year later:
New clutch
New glowplugs
New egr valve
Needed tracking

This has cost me a lot of money and to say that it only has 34000 miles on it, this not a reliablr car at all. Time for a change of car and quick before the cambelt goes!

And the sunroof whistles, and the front wheels are not aligned properly.end of rant lol
