I just had to brake hard and as the car came to the ultimate point of stopping (when the back end settles back into place) the windscreen went BANG and cracked from the tax disc a half way across to the middle. (n)

This surely must have been caused by a bad chassis?

Oh well, i'll get onto the phone to autoglass tomorrow. *sigh*

Not at all! If the windscreen had a chip near one of the seals any sudden movement causing the car to flex could easily cause that. Cold weather will split stone chips on the screen but chips right against the window seal can split in very hot weather as the cars metal expands. Glass expands and contracts at different temperatures but any fracture in it will make it incredibly weak even though its laminated.

I agree with dcthebear. I once had a screen crack after parking up some two hours after I got hit by a rock on the motorway. Nothing happened at the time of the impact and then later on in the carpark, all nice and still, and ..bang.

At least you braked. This guy didn't http://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/...nto-side-of-tk-maxx-in-peterborough-1-3722789 and he's got a lot worse than a cracked screen!

I just rang my insurers (elephant) and they have organised a guy to come out tomorrow. Apparently won't affect my no claims and I just have to pay £70. I can live with that! More gutted that now i'll need to buy a new tax disc holder :p

Got it replaced for £70 today. They came out to my workplace to do it.
Company called "national autoglass".

ive used autoglass for replacement screens in the Stilo, Saxo and two in the 306, never had a problem.

last year the screen on our 306 split in half when i did a right turn into a junction, no reason for it, no chips, no damage, no impact, just decided to go. the replacement didnt last long though, got smashed by a nut!

autoglass keep all your excess though and still get about 300 quid per car from your insurance, most car screens are about 130 quid, an independent will take the 30 quid off you and claim the 100 from your insurance, and wont wipe your bonnet with a dirty rag

if the independent has a deal with your insurance company he wont take any cash from you

So you've had a couple of windscreens changed; probably in the mid nineties and now you regard yourself as an expert on the subject?

Seriously, do not engage into conversations that you know nothing about.

THE most misinformed and misleading post on this forum.

Must agree with that. Windscreens can break for all sorts of reasons but autoglass and autowindscreens have always done top work on our lorry's and those screens are huge! Try not to drive too close behind us in future and avoid where the majority of stone chips come from!

Make sure your lorry wheel nuts are tight as thats what destroyed one of my screens - a lorry wheel nut!

only having a laugh! (although it was a whopping wheel nut that did it that is true)

this, i have got to say is the first time i have heard someone slag off autoglass

what part of it is misinformation? ive had about 6 screens done in the last 5 years, there is a post on here about the damage autoglass did to my Mercedes and refused to put right, don't work for them do you?

they even filled out a sheet saying the damage wasn't there before the job, but still denied it was them
