Hi all,

I've got a a '58 Bravo 1.9 120 M-Jet that I bought last summer. A couple of weeks ago I started getting the dreaded check engine message when starting.

I took it for a diagnostic and they said it's the EGR valve reporting the error. They reset it, but pretty soon the same day, the error came back.

I've got a few questions if anyone can help me with:

  • I first got the error when there wasn't much fuel in the tank, could this have caused it, or is it just due to carbon build up over the years?
  • Do I need to replace the EGR valve, or is it worth giving it a clean first?
  • If it's worth giving a clean, how easy is it to do? I'm reasonably technically minded. But must admit, not a complete car expert.
  • I've been £230 inc. parts and labour to replace it, does that sound reasonable?

Loads of questions I know, but very grateful for any help anyone can give.

Ta,

Clean it first, usually fixes it. It is quite easy to change yourself, £230 sounds expensive!

Never done it myself, just going from other posts on the forum. Mine was done under warranty, and took them less than an hour.

I first gave mine a clean first when it went as it's always worth a shot, but unfortunately the solenoid had gone.

I did replace it myself in the end and yes it was pretty easy to do, took about 20 minutes to unbolt and bolt on the new one. It took three drives of about 5 miles to clear the engine management light.

A word of advice, I bought my new one from eBay and I got the Vauxhall branded one as it was cheaper that the Fiat brand for some reason, even though they are identical!

If you do decide to replace it, check to make sure you get the 120bhp one not the 150bhp, as they are different. The part number for both the Fiat and Vauxhall are exactly the same and it is part no 55215032.

It cost me £67.50 + £6.50 p&p so quite a bit cheaper than £230!! ;)

Great, thanks for the tips! That's convinced me to give it a go myself and save a bit of cash.

Yeah I was thinking it sounded a bit expensive, and that was 3 quotes from garages around Manchester, two being Fiat dealers. Unfortunately, I don't know a decent independent Fiat specialist in the area.

Had a go at removing the EGR valve. It was mostly straightforward, but I got a bit stuck disconnecting the pipe below.

What's the best method, removing the hex screws and leaving the pipe attached to the engine, or loosening the o ring and leaving the pipe attached to the valve?

Been trying to find some instructions, found ones for the same engine in Alfas, Vauxhalls and Stilos, but the Bravo seems slightly different. Will give it another go tomorrow, but if I don't get anywhere, I might have to pony up the money to the garage.

Thanks!

Buy one from shop4parts and do it yourself and you'll save £150.

I done a guide on here ages ago when I had a 1.9. A small socket set is your best friend.

I think I disconnected the inlet first then took the actaul valve off the engine and get in about it with a small toothbrush and blow all the carbon away. Then put the 2 halves of the valve back together, attach it to the inlet pipe then back on to the engine. It's a lot more tricky if you put it on the engine and then try and put the inlet back on.

HI
Rather than starting a new thread
08 plate Bravo 8v 120 BHP
72K service having had EGR cleaned a couple of times
Mechanic friend doing service advised EGR needed replacing so blanked out
shortly after engine "engine check" came on
Confirmed by OBD plug in EGR insufficient gas etc...
Couple of questions questions
Having blanked off ECR, pick up / acceleration a lot better, but MPG at steady throttle seems worse, any similar issues
Has anybody fitted EGR part 55215032 (Vauxhaul) to above engine and any problems
Finally currently getting prices of £200 from Fiat, £100 from Vauxhall dealer and £55 on Ebay for non OEM parts
Anybody have any experience of using non OEM for EGR
Regards
Mick

Sorry to tag onto this thread, however I wonder if anyone can help.

I recently bought a Bravo 1.9 120 Dynamic. I started to get the check engine warning message when starting the car. There was no MIL light thereafter and the car drove perfectly.
I removed the EGR Valve and cleaned it thoroughly with Carb Cleaner. There was quite a lot of soot and the spring loaded valve was quite sticky. Once finished it was nice and clean and the mechanism moved freely as it should. I put it back on the car and then continued to use it expecting the engine warning to stop. It didn't however and if I clear the code (P0401) using my diag unit, the warning soon comes back.
I removed the EGR again and this time turned my attention to the solenoid. The piece that sticks out (the plunger?) appeared to be stook in situe (about 1.5mm out of the housing) so I grabbed it with some pliers and pulled it out as far is it would go. I then sprayed some wd40 on it and worked it back in and out. Once finished it moved freely and springed back into position as it should.
I then put it back on the car and now the car struggles to start, runs rough, has little power and I am getting the additional code - P0403 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Circuit Malfunction.

I'm cheesed off as at least the car ran perfeclty before I tinkered!

Any ideas whats going on?
