Hi,

Recently I've had typical EGR problems whereas for a couple of seconds theres no power then all of a sudden it comes . I found that its worse first thing and when it warms up its a lot better.

So I decided to clean it yesterday with help from the excellent guide on here , I found it was totally covered in about 2 - 3 mm of carbon . It cleaned up well with carb cleaner but what i found was that the little pin (not sure of the correct name for it) on the electrical part where it fits onto the EGR itself and goes against the plunger didnt always pop up, when pressed in, it would sometimes stay in but then other times it would just pop back again .
Anyway I reassembled it and I think it was a little better but theres still some loss of power until it whooses into action .

My question is would the little pin be the problem and does this mean I would have to replace the EGR ? or is there another problem I'm not aware of ?

Thanks

If the EGR is broken, don't bother replacing it. Block it with this : http://www.ebay.in/itm/110773430496

Problem solved, performance improved.

Hi, thanks for your reply , so do you think that the EGR has had it , I was looking at the guide again now and the little pin I was reffering too is i think the little plunger on the solenoid .

If i decide to blank off the EGR I assume there wont be any detrimental effect on anything on the engine .

Actually your engine will last longer with a blocked EGR since you're not feeding it exhaust polutants anymore.

I think there's an easy way to make sure the problem is the egr by unpluging it (the electric cable) and run the engine. I'm not 100% sure about that, I think I read it in a french forum.

Hi, thanks again for your reply . Thats interesting and makes sense to me about not feeding the engine with pollutants , I thought I'd read somewhere that the gases from the EGR actually are beneficial as they act as a coolant to the turbo , not sure if thats correct though .

So if I unplug The EGR what should happen , will the car go better or even worse ?

I'm still wondering if the problem I have is the little plunger sometimes sticking .

I think that unplugging the valve is just for diagnosing the problem, don't drive with unplugged because the computer will display an error.

as for the turbo cooling theory I think it's wrong, my brother trashed his 1.9 multijet with egr blocked for years and it never had a single problem. even after years of trashing it still ran like the first day. the only thing I advise everyone to do is use fuel additives that work as lubricant since the new diesel fuels lack sulfur.

Still wondering if its the sticky pin/plunger that is the problem with the EGR . Has anyone please got any thoughts on this .

Thanks

i recently had my egr replaced under warranty..

I used the guide on here to take it off and clean it, but when a torch was shone through it it had actually failed.

Worth trying this...

I had exactly the same symptoms as you, lack of power and then all of a sudden the car took off.

Decided to change my Egr , bought one in Eurocarparts with using a 25% discount code , paid £93 .

The difference is incredible, no more lag , just instant power , its been ages since its pulled this well . Really glad I replaced it .:)

Wasn't 100% happy to blank it as I said in an earlier post I'm sure ive read that the gases passing through the egr actually have a beneficial purpose for the cooling of the turbo , so I didn't really want to risk it .

Hi Cymro

I've been reading your thread and it seems that i have a problem similar towhat you experienced.

did it seem that the turbo wasn't kicking in till around 2500 rpm whennormally its around 1900 rpm? did it feel like you were running withoutconsiderable power for all the low revs? mine also seems to be relativelyintermittent being that this morning it appeared better (even if not right) butthis afternoon it was back to being powerless.
Any rapid response to this would be very appreciated as i have an MOT in 3weeks!

Cheers

Ian

I am having a similar problem with the 1.4 T-JET 57.
Just seems to happen to diesels on here havent seen anyone having these problems with a petrol.
It seems to only happen in high gears with me when i boot it.If i press the accellerator slowly it doesnt happen.:bang:
