New car (2wks old) - just had it in dealer (Arnold Clark) for severe brake squeal from the front - an hour later, they had "road tested" and checked all brakes etc, but couldn't (a) hear anything and (b) find anything wrong.

Now, I know I'm not going crazy as my wife is nagging me about the squeal, but the question, is, if the dealer is saying the above (a and b), what the hell do I do ?

The squeal usually only happens when slowing to a stop, so I know it's the brakes..but I'm now actually seriously contemplating taking the car back to the dealer and leaving the keys...

Arnold Clark suck - I'll never buy a car from them again (there is a long list of complaints that aren't relevant to this thread though)...

Help !

If the brakes are worn any good garage could have a look for you and may give you a reasonable price on replacents It may be worth getting a second opinion and going back to the dealer with this, stating that they knowingly sold you a car with worn brakes and didn't tell me this etc (btw did they service it prior to sale?).

If there is a fault with the brakes the car would have to go to fiat for warranty repairs anyway so you could go yourself.

Mine squeal like hell under feather touch breaking but dont when you put the foot down harder, I suspect they just are missing anti vibration clips or perhaps just some copperease behind the pads.

Thanks guys..small update...

Was out with the wife and kids on a trip to Falkirk, and didn't they just squeal every time I slowed to a stop...the brakes, not the family... :)

Went over a speed bump at a normal pace, put my foot on the brake, nothing, more pedal travel, then 100% brakes all at once. Not good for my wife's neck.

The car is now back with the dealer, the red mist having dispersed slightly - and I'm now in a citroen c3 courtesy whilst they get to the bottom of the squeal and temperamental brakes...

They say they serviced the car prior to me driving it away, but who knows, all I have is a stamp in the book to say they did. Still, if I get it back, and it's still not right regardless of their "there's nothing wrong" attitude, the old Trading standards, "Repair or Replace" law for used cars will be being cited.

£6000 is a lot of money - and it's worse because it was cash and not a finance deal.

I genuinely could just be the brake compound squealing, it happens and nothing to do with the actual car.

On the stilo section there is a long thread regarding sqealing brakes . Ive had the problem with Mintex replacements and also to a lesser extent with EBC. Aftermarket pads often dont have the anti-sqeak shim fitted or supplied . Could be no more or less than this . (By the way 6k sounds a good price to me for a 2008 car.)

Brake squeal is common problem on modern cars, primarily due to the fact that asbestos is not used any more in brake pads. its is normally resolved through vibration clips, but sometimes, its id just due to the tolerances used in the brake pad compound. quick solution is copperease, which has no impact on braking. Other than that all you can do is replace them and hope its gets better. Peugeot 206s are notorious for it.

Car is ready for collection, so will update on their findings/resolution... :)

Just to clarify this before anyone does anything daft the copperease is on the back of the pad to hold it in place and stop it vibrating not on the surface!!!

Got the car back - and they stripped front and back, by the looks of things, replaced the pads, certainly the squeal and sudden application has gone, so I'm happy with that.

They said (I'd queried clutch travel on the pedal) that they couldn't alter anything to do with the clutch as they are hydraulic ? Which is weird, as when I drove it away, the clutch pedal isn't half tight and stiff.

Hmm.

Anyroads, happy the brakes are sorted, and thanks to all on this thread :)

It is a hydraulic clutch, well my 165 sport is, they are so smooth compared to cable operated units (maybe thats just me ;-))
