Hello!
That cheap plastic broke, it's not normal to look like that. There are some guys on the Romanian forum with the same problem. They tried to replace that plastic with some leather trims. Here is the link for that topic: http://www.clubfiat.ro/forum/index.php?showtopic=10693 Although I'm pretty sure you can't understand what they're saying :), there are some pictures you might find useful. You'll need an account to see the pictures though.
Good luck!

thanks cris for the link. saw the pictures and changing it to leather wrap is too hassle for me.

however i've replaced it with a more flexible and softer plastic strip that won't crack or break over time. (y)

That's a pretty good match for colour!

How did you replace it, and where did you get the plastic (got any left? :D)

well, i just get hold of what i can find inside my house. it's cut out from a thick plastic document holder.

to remove the broken strip, i simply 'pulled' it out bit by bit. lower the lever to remove the top part and raise up the lever to remove the lower part.

using the original strip as a blueprint, i cut out a new strip and simply 'slot' it into the groove. likewise, lower lever to slot in the top and make your way to the lower part while raising the lever.

the plastic strip is flexible enough to bend and slot in easily. took me about 5-10mins only. (y)

That's awesome...may I know what did you use to take out the broken strip?

i think mine is oming up for replacement soon... it doesnt have a hole as much at the top (or even the bottom)... but at the sides its started popping up a little)... i have my eyes on some material at work :p

Mines just broken in exactly the same place, slightly annoyed, was looking for a leather option but can't seem to find one

I had the same problem while the car was under warranty and they changed it under warranty. The problem did not reappear.

Mine looked just like the one in the pic, after a bit of puzzlement I realised that it was simply the wrong way round!

Took it out (fiddly), turned it through 180 degrees, refitted it (fiddlier) and, lo and behold, no more gap.

done that for now, theres still about a 10mm gap, but its better than a 40mm gap, more than likely cover it in leather or sumthing when I get the time

Mine is like that bet it was the fiat dealers put it back wrong when I had the gear cables replaced under warranty

This nearly took my daughters finger off recently when my other half put the brake on and she was fiddling there with earphones. I never really noticed it till then.
