Not quite because diesels hold a premium over petrols in the used car market, as 2nd hand owners can see they save money @ £350 a year.

It's swings and roundabouts, unless you're closing in on 20k a year, or need a derv for some reason (company car, towing etc...) then I recon a Tjet will be almost as cheap and almost certainly as fun, if not more fun to use.

18k in the first year and I have the tipo in the sig for real fun. :)

The extra cost offset arguement against the diesel is utter ********!

It assumes your buying brand new diesel and comparing it with a brand new petrol - nearly all diesels are the same price as the petrol 2nd hand or they were when we got ours 6 months ago (in fact ours was slightly cheaper - but we got a good deal) - remember cash is king (y)

So the idea of saving money is running an old Fiat as a second car?

can you ship me some petrol at these prices please:)

That's how much it was when I filled up today in Guildford.

Cars are usually spec specific. If you saw two identical cars at a dealer, same color, same spec, same age and milage just one a Mjet and another a Tjet the derv will be more expensive. Things like climate control can change a price by £200~+/-.

Didn't I just write this is exactly what happened and they werent:bang:

of course optional extras will add value to a car, I was comparing like with like and because the cars, ie the 150 Sports (derv and pet) that we looked at were both a similar price, the derv is cheaper to run.

Re: swopping my 100hp for a Bravo

i didnt find they were a similar price.

if you look at 2nd hand values of say the stilo, the JTD models cost more to buy second hand than the petrol.

And the same with the Bravo/a, Marea, Tipo..... If you've found a diesel the same price as your petrol, then you're being taken to the cleaners on the cost of the petrol.

Running a multijet means I have the money free to run as you say an 'old fiat' as a 2nd car. It doesn't have the bulk of a Bravo so it's more fun. No driver aids other than a low-assistance power steering.

If I drove a T-Jet with the mileage I do I wouldn't have free cash for the Tipo.

What about reliability? Although I am biased, it seems clear from the posts on this forum that dervs are far less reliable; there is so much technology required to comply with emission laws that this is having an effect on engine reliability. Dervs are (generally) more complex thus more expensive to repair. Ultimately, we all each make our own decision, but personally, I am delighted to be back in a petrol car with a free revving engine and avoiding the stink of diesel all over my hands every time I used to fill up.

Re: swapping my 100hp for a Bravo

with the stilo, the DERV cars seem to be more reliable than the petrol onces.

i too have a second car for knocking around in. its actually the mrs car but we use it for short runs and shopping trips and if its been stood still for a while (usually a month) i run it for work

its not a fiat though. its a saxo

Here's a simple to do statistic. Go to Advanced Search and search in Bravo forum for:

"problem tjet" - 10 results
"problem mjet" - 19 results
"problem petrol" 14 results
"problem diesel" - 24 results

May not be fully reliable though. Fact is Tjet engines were introduced later than Mjets. And then we don't know the total number of diesel and petrol owners. Also, it searches inside posts too, not only titles, and many of the usages of the word "problem" may be out of the diesel/petrol context. But there's still some clear tendency I think...
