Hi everyone. New poster here!

I bought a Bravo in July this year.

Not been too encouraging really as i have had 2 recalls (1 cross member and 1 rear weld)

Someone crashed into me last week and need a new door!

Anyway this is besides the point.

Ever since i have had the car it has had trouble starting. It is like it has problem ticking over. It will rumble for sometimes up to 5 seconds before it kicks in. It will do this even if you abandon start and try again. I pointed this out to the dealer i got it from when i took it for its first recall and they said they would have a look but i heard nothing about it after that.

I have read earlier posts about this same problem but i have a feeling it is more extreme in my case as it doesnt just happen in the morning or when the engine is cold. It happens ALL the time. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

I was the one who posted the thread about the cold morning starts.

I am still having a similar problem to you. The exact same symptoms. Starts but rumbles as if it's about to cut out at any point and continues to do this for about 5 secs or so before stalling. The only way I can get it to start and up to speed is to use the accelator to rev the engine. Once I do that the engine gets up too speed and idles fine.

The only difference I have is mine only seems to occur after it's been sitting a while (i.e. overnight) I did think it was the cold morning starts but this morning it was pretty mild but it still struggled to start. I've even went out at midnight when it's been below freezing and the engine has been sitting since 5pm or 6pm that night and it's started fine. But the next morning it's been the usual struggle to get it to start again!!

I'm gonna book it in to the dealer for next week when I am off work as it shouldn't be starting so badly for a one year old car!

Bit of a common problem it seems. Hopefully Fiat will have a fix for this soon which can be applied to all affected cars. Good thing it's been caught while even the 3 year warranty cars are still well in warranty.

What do you think the problem may be?

I have read on a few sites that dodgy fuel could cause similar symtoms to what I experience. My start up problem seemed to happen the morning after I last filled up at my local Shell. I just filled up again tonight so I'll be able to tell tomorrow if maybe it was fuel related. A few have mentioned air intake systems being the problem. I have the GSR Kit fitted? Maybe this?

It really seems with mine at least as if it isn't getting enough of something in the morning. And after 5secs or so gives up the fight and stalls. Where as if I give it some acceleration it burst to life and then idles as normal (slightly higher revs in cold for a short period of time before dropping to normal idle again)

I would prefer to fix it myself though if it's a simple repair or maintenance thing rather than loose the car to the dealership for a few days whilst they investigate or repair. Particularly in the run up to Xmas when I need the car.

If I pop back into Wentanes I'll ask how they're getting on with the one they're looking at. As far as I know the one they have is standard Tjet.

I'm the 1.4 16v (as you probably already know :))

Apart from the struggling start in the morning it's running like a dream though. I may tomorrow if it's still light check the battery when I get home. Check it's operating as it should be. The battery is only 16months old (original battery) but you never know.

Well I went out this morning to start the car and it started fine. Nothing more than a slight hesitancy that every car gives on a freezing cold, icy morning. The first morning start in about a week without any problems. It was cold and frosty this morning again as it has been for the past week when I have been having the problem.

As explained above I filled up with fuel lastnight from almost empty. My start up problems seemed to occur the morning after my last fill up of fuel. Could be coincidence but maybe I had a bad lot of fuel at my last fill up (Shell). I may also change my fuel filter too in the coming days as I feel it not being required at the 18k service and not to change it until 36k miles is a long time to go without changing it.

I'll monitor it over the next couple of days to see if the problem arises again. Fingers crossed it doesn't :D

Can you be more specific, ? is it like a banging type/rumble type noise on start up ?
Also is is 1.9 multijet 8v ?

Hi everyone.

Thanks for the fast replies. Sorry for my delay. Was away for a day.

Brav-oh - Yeh yours seems to be the same as mine. Im not sure about the fuel thing though cos it has happened since i got it (3 months ago). Mine also seems to work with a bit of a push on the accelerator. I think i may book it into the dealership. Wrong time of year to be doing it really though.

To be more specific i have a 1.9 120 model.

It is a rumble on the car when it is trying to turn the engine over.

Thanks.

The Bravo petrol engines don't have a serviceable fuel filter. In fact since 2001 no petrol Fiats have had replaceable fuel filters. ;)
