The temperature guage on Brava 80 16v, has started to go funny on me, normally it sits abount the half way mark, or just above.

The other day, I was sitting in traffic and I noticed the needle rise quickly to maximum and then immediately straight back down to the middle (normal). Then about 5 mins later it did the same again. So I pulled over and checked everything and all seemed ok, no leaks, steam or anything.

Then two days later the same thing happened again, the fan appears to be working ok, so I am at a complete loss.

I have a knowledgeable mate who suggested it could be an air lock in the water system or a problem with the alternatore belt (as there is a small squeal when the car starts when cold).

I should say that my car is a 99 Brava 80 16v.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated !!

My 96 Brava 1.4 has a similarly "jumpy" temperature guage. I believe that it is probably just a "Fiat" type electrical fault/quirk, particularly as you don't seem to be observing any other overheating symptoms and the guage spends most of its time where it should be. I think that it is unlikely that you would be able to observe very quick temperature variations on any car temp guage

It also sounds like your alternator belt should either be adjusted or replaced.

Hope this helps

my 99 td bravo guage sometimes doesent register at all, sometimes it registeres over the middle(where it is normally) a light tap on hte right hand side of the dash top usually returns the 'right' reading. dare i say italian electrics?:D
