HI all, i have just bought a Fiat Bravo, nothing special 96 N reg 1.4 sxi 50000 miles metallic green. Few minor scratches and a couple of little dents, but only 2600, might have had a respray at some point but it all looks very good so who ever did it put a lot of time into it. Anyway I have had it for just over two weeks and 600 miles (very pleased with it reasonably pokey for a 1.4!) however the injector warning light has started to come on, it has done this on three or four recent journeys, one motorway two long ish ones and a short trip. There is no noticeable problem when the lights come on, still picks up cleanly and revs freely and evenly, however the temperature gauge does stop working when this happens. Any ideas what's up with it and is it something that i can sort or will it have to go to a specialist(i hope not).

On the subject of the temp gauge it does seem that it never gets above a quarter on the gauge whilst going, but when stopped and ticking over it rests about half, is this usual or have i got a problem with the thermostat?

any answers?

cheers

When you are on the move the thermostat should regulate the temperature pretty precisely. When you come to a standstill however there is very little air going through the raditor to cool things down so inevitably the coolant temp starts to rise. This will continue until the electric fan cuts in and draws cool air across the radiator or you start moving again. This is all quite normal.

The injector light is lit by the ECU whenever a sensor is not providing a signal within the correct range or not providing a signal at all (i.e. wire broke off).

On most modern Fiats there are two coolant temperature sensors, one for the gauge and one for the ECU, but it just could be that on the Bravo there is only one temperature sensor that feeds a signal to both the gauge and the ECU. If this is the case then I'm 99% this is what your problem is. It could be a bad connectionn or it could be the sensor which needs replacing.

If you still have doubts then you could take to Fiat and they could put the diagnostic computer on the ECU for you. The ECU keeps a record in the form of a fault code whenever the ECU light is lit which should confirm which sensor is to blame.

Hi

I've got a 1.8 Brava ELX and mine has got two sensors. The first is on the Thermostat, and that sends a sensor to the ECU. The second is on the cylinder block and sends a signal to the dashboard. I have looked on my Fiat Parts CD and the sensor you need (which will most likely be causing the problem) is 5972332 (thats the Fiat Part Number) and costs about £20.

As for the gauge, mine stops at about 1/3. It only meets half when it is in traffic, but never goes higher :). I have replaced all the dash sensor, thermostat and coolant, which made a slight difference (especially the new thermonstat), but still does not meet half. My local dealer said this is fine.

Good Luck!

Hi all,

I too have just bought a second hand Bravo.

Mine is a '96 N Reg Ink black 1.8 HLX' with 52,000 on the clock. Interior is very clean as is the exterior with only the usual light 'Supermarket Car Park' battle scars on the doors. How much did it cost me....£2650.....basically coz I pointed out as many trivial points as possible and got £350 off the asking price. Bargain! :D

The only obvious problem the car has is the leccy Sunroof is a bit noisy and whistley at speed which most people attribute to the seal so thats something I'll be changing in the next couple of weeks.

I have also noticed that my temp guage on the dash doesn't ever rise above a quarter during normal use or even on a two hour motorway drive. It generally sits on the third line from the bottom of the guage which does seem low.

The highest I've seen it go is half way which is when I've been siting in traffic for about 15 mins, then as soon as I'm moving again it drops back down. I can only imagine that Bravos must be super efficient at cooling themselves when on the move.

Since it seems that a lot of people seem to be having this temp problem it would be interesting to see if there are any Bravo owners who have temp guages that sit anywhere above a quarter during normal driving.

Hi peteu

in '97 my 1,4 had a similar problem: the injector light was always on and the temperature gauge down... but always, not sometimes...I brought my Brava in a garage the day after...
Fiat garage resolved me this problem replacing the termostath...

receipt report this cost: 121800 lire (labour excluded) about £ 42... but I paid nothing, Brava was still in warranty...

cheers

Don't know if Peteu is still around since he posted this back in March 2002. ;)

I thought I'd just bump this thread rather than starting another on the same subject.

If anyone has still got this temperature guage problem.....or found a fix.....or knows if its not really a problem at all in the first place, all Bravo owners experiences would be a help!

Ops! I checked day and month... not the year! :D

As you say NeCo... the post could be useful for someone with same problem...

bye :)

Haven't looked into it but as far as i know the temp guage sitting about 1/4 way up poses no problem. If you let the car idle while standing you will notice the cooling fan kicks in when the guage hits the half way mark. I think this just the calibration of the bravo guage, normal temp is registered 1/4 way up the guage as apposed to other cars where it may be 1/2 way.

After driving it around over the past weekend, I've noticed that the guage does tend to rise when driving in normal city traffic so I guess having it stay quite low at speed is normal.

It is strange though compared to other cars, as is not being able to leave side lights on, and not having the wipers automatically come on when you spray your water jets. Those crazy Italians hey!

Oh well, niggles aside, the Bravo is still a good car and its giving me a lot of enjoyment.

Hi NeCo

If you want have water jets and moving wipers simultaneously: press the right lever toward you for water jet and at the same time toward up for fast moving wipers...

What are side lights in English?... Maybe park lights?... There is a little button near the ignition lock for activate them: you must turn the key towards you (anticlockwise) and at the same time pushing the button... be careful: if you get the wrong direction turn you will activate the self-destruction system and will have only 10 seconds to put you in safe :D...

I never had any problems [8D]...

Ciao :)!

Roby

ps

I don't know other cars systems, my grandfather, my father and me had only Fiat ;)...

Cheers Roby,

Would never have found that silly bit of black plastic on the ignition mechanism if you hadn't pointed that out. As for the wipers, its kind of what I'd been doing anyway, but it still seems silly that you can squirt water all over your windscreen wihtout have the wipers come on or maybe its just me who thinks thats wierd!

Thanks for the tips anyway, you've been very helpful :)

NeCo

PS: I thought the self destruct only activated when you press the big square button under the seat and the red light comes on! :)

Hi all,

Just bought a Fiat Bravo. My temp gauge seems fine. It goes about halfway sometimes, after intense driving in hot weather. Yes I live in Britain! lol

So so far so good, no temp sensor issues.
