Re: bravo engine idle erratic help!!

Hi, can anyone help "bravo 1200 x reg" engine idels at around 2000 revs, sometimes drops back to original tick over, checked and replaced what I think was the electronic choke at the bk of the carb also changed the engine timer sensor near crank wheel bottom left hand side. any ideas thanks martin

sounds like yet another 1.2 with TPS (throttle position sensor) problems. the dealer can teach the ecu the TPS range, or at least diagnose the fault if it is something else.

did you disconnect the TPS or the battery or let it go flat before the problem started?

If you tap the idle air control valve (electro valve) and the revs drop back then the faulty piece is the smaller of the 2 little cylinders (2 pin electical connector). Fiat don't sell that part on it's own so you have to buy complete new unit at £140.

Or you can try taking apart the old one and cleaning all the metal pins, especially near the spring and re-trying it.

Hi. sorry about the delay mate, can you tell me where the "idle air control valve" is located, thanks martin

Hi, sorry about the delay mate, to be honest it,s been that long now ,I carn't remember when it started, where is the "throttle position sensor" situated, battery is fine, fiat dealer charge £110 just to diagnose prob, then cost of repair, cars only worth £800, thanks martin

on the 1.2 both the throttle position sensor and idle speed control actuator are fitted to the throttle body (aka butterfly casing). the throttle body is a commonly faulty part on the 1.2 models and usually causes idle problems just like yours.

the attached pic shows what it looks like. it is fitted inbetween the inlet manifold and the air intake pipe. very easy to replace.

first thing to do is replace the throttle body with a scrapyard part. make sure you leave the battery disconnected for 20 mins before you disconnect anything on the throttle body, that way you have a chance of avoiding the need to go to a dealer for the relearn procedure. only reconnect the battery once the new throttle body is fitted and connected.

when you first start the car the idle will probably be high because the ecu is performing its first stages of the automatic relearn procedure. this should complete successfully and the idle will settle back to its correct rpm within a few minutes.
