Hi again :)

I have now noticed that on some occasions, for example: if parked and when i turn steering wheel all the way to the right (not sure if only to the right is the exclusive case yet) and start moving, i hear a kind of grinding sound like two things moving against each other, which kind of goes away once i straighten wheel.

I also seem to notice bumps feeling harder on left wheel (which seems to make more of a banging noise when going over a bump) this bump issue could be me just getting fixated on having a possible problem in the axle however.

I mentioned this to a friend and said he had something similar which he had resolved by cleaning the ball bearings of his car, then sound was gone. Any comments?

the grinding noise you hear is probably where the power steering is too far to the left / right, if you release the wheel a tiny bit then the noise will stop.

pretty much every car i have ever driven all make that sound. its just the strain on the power steering.....

(apparently)

:yeahthat:
cars with power steering will make a noise if the steering wheel is fully turned left or right because the pump is bleeding all its pressure (it doesnt want to force the steering further than it can go)

cleaning or replacing the wheel bearing can not have anything to do with noises that appear only over bumps. a noise over bumps is usually the drop link on the antiroll bar (easily replaced). it can also be due to worn bushes in the wishbone, a faulty shock absorber, worn track rod end, loose bolts on the strut (especially the top 3), a badly fitted spring, etc etc. but i would definatey suspect the drop link first, and there is no way it could be the wheel bearing if the noise only happens over bumps.

no noises over bumps, just kind of too bangy than i'd like, and i feel better about grinding after the feedback, ill test turning steering a bit in other direction when it happens to see if it does stop

wots that? :)

The joint where the driveshaft enters the wheel hub.

When your car makes this noise is it only when you are holding the wheel hard over?

Does it make the noise even if stationary and you turn the wheel all the way left/right.
Or does the noise only start once the car is actually moving and you have the wheel still in the turned position?

Sounds like your CV joint is going - better get it checked out soon. If its minor you might be able to get it sealed up, but if the damage is too extensive then you'll most probably have to replace the pair..

dont think it does it while im moving, though im still analysing the prob so not ruling anything out at the moment, but it definitely can do it when im stationary and turning the wheel, so hope that rules out the cv joint (sounds expensive) hehe

I think so, yes, never noticed when wheel straight or moving straight, always when turning wheel or turned all way

Yes, on occasion

Could be happening too, i'll take extra care to make sure of this, but if this happens always after the same noise when stationary

Hmm.. how loud is the grinding sound and how noticeable is the vibration?

And does it do this at a certain spot when you turn the steering wheel?

not very loud but definitely audible, and vibration isnt that strong, but ud have to have stereo on very loud for example not to notice it.

I tried turning steering wheel left and right while parked and couldnt discern a specific point when it does it, seems to happen at random intervals

I have a fairly similar issue to you as well, though its more like a small click/thud whenever the steering wheel is turned to a specific spot (either to the left or right). The dealer said its something to do with the indicators being on, which is wrong because it happens all the time whether the indicators are on or not.

the indicator cancelling unit would be a suspect if it makes a clicking. thats not uncommon on most cars, especially if you're turing from lock to lock in a carpark.

But even if the indicators are not on? Any ideas how it actually makes the clicking?

when you turn the steering wheel past the cancelling point it often clicks even if indicators are not on, but its more quiet than when indicators are on. not sure why, but i've noticed it on many cars, especially if you have the front end jacked up and go from lock to lock.
