Possible Clutch Problem

Hi all,

As the title suggests, it looks like I have a clutch problem

I have a 1.4 Bravo on an S plate which has done 65k. I noticed last night that when I depressed the clutch pedal that there was a knocking sound. I am still able to change gears and drive the car. Also when I got out of the car last night there was a smell of burning rubber, which can't be good.

I am no expert but figured that there is a clutch problem. Having read through various threads on the great site, I am still not sure. So, is it the clutch, the slave, the thrust bearing or something else.

Any ideas or sugestions would be most welcome.

Many Thanks.

Timbo.

Re: Possible Clutch Problem

noise when clutch pedal half pressed = release bearing (aka thrust bearing, throw out bearing), noise only when pedal fully pressed = pilot bearing. the pilot bearing provides support for the end of the transmission's input shaft. its not part of the clutch. however, its almost always the release bearing. but 65k is early for it to need replacing. and i've never heard the noise described as a knocking noise before, so i'm less confident that your problem will actually be a bearing. a knocking suggests something else to me, but i'd need to hear it for myself.

Re: Possible Clutch Problem

Thanks for the replies.

The noise starts when I am about half way through depressing the clutch pedal and continues for as long as the pedal is held down. Also as I drove it this morning the clutch was not smooth at all, though as I said above actually changing gear is not a problem.

Re: Possible Clutch Problem

Also, the noise is more of a rattle than a knocking if this helps

Re: Possible Clutch Problem

Thanks for the info jug

I have also spoken to my father who is way more mechanically minded than me and he has come to the same conclusion as you.

I've managed to find a garage that will fit a new clutch for 150 inc VAT which is a relief as I was expecting it to be nearer double that.

Once this is done I've got the injectors to sort out as my care is missing a bit and I get that much loved injector warning light appear

Re: Possible Clutch Problem

on a 1.4 its rarely the injector (only have 1 as its single point injection), the injector light is just an engine management fault light. it can be due to many things, usually a sensor fault. a diagnostic check should identify the fault.

Re: Possible Clutch Problem

Thanks again jug and the mystery deepens.

I figured it to be the injector as the car is missing a little and it is also sluggish when going up hills. I shall follow your advice and get a diagnostic test done
