Hi i've got a brava 1.4 sx '96 model

It recently had a new clutch and slave fitted,
the problem is that the bell housing came away form the engine( only bottom 2 bolts but still travelled), the bell housing has now been fitted correctly and the slave has been reblead, but this is where the problem lays, when selecting gears there is a grinding noise and can not select gear. The foot pedal has got pressure and the slave does move the clutch arm but just grinds away when selecting gear........!!!!!!!!!

Has any1 got any ideas
because at the moment i feel like this:bang:

cheers
tony

I had gotten the same noise after I had change the slave cylinder
I think Jug suggested that the system still have air in it. I then bleed the system again and the noise havent stop as yet

if the gears can be selected with the engine switched off then we can assume the linkages are probably correctly adjusted. if you cant select gears then the linkages need adjusting.

it could also be a problem with the gearbox, if the bell housing did move this would have misalinged the block and box, usually causing damage to the internals, esecially the input shaft and differential.

however if the gears were selectable prior to the new clutch it almost certainly means the new cltuch has been fitted wrongly. in this case it sounds as though the slave cylinder is not pushing the thrust bearing, or the thrust bearing is not disengaging the plate. either way it appears the clutch does not disengage, meaning you cant select gears. to test for this type of problem you should select a gear with the engine switched off, then press the clutch pedal and try to start the car. if the car jurks forward it shows the clutch is not disengaged when the clutch pedal is pressed, in that case its time for whoever fitted the clutch to slap themsleves and take the box off for inspection of the clutch components. i think this is the most likely option.

hope this helps (y)

thats hat i was thinking,
just run in to another problem,
it is the track rod on drivers side has sheared off,
i know it needs a new one thats not the problem,
it how to get the damn thing off,
is the nut a locking nut or is it part of the track rod,
tried both put metal seems to be fused on.
sodding cars

track rods ends are always difficult to get off. its usually a good idea to clean the thread with a steel brush bit on a drill, then use a bit of heat (blow torch). the nut is a lock nut, so you need to make sure you turn it the correct way (away from rod end). then you can turn the track rod end off, but make sure you keep the rod held in position or that may turn as well. when the new one is fitted you MUST adjust the tracking, at home you can use a track mat, but getting it done at a garage using lazer equipment is always better and does not cost much at all (£10).

yep thanks for that
All back together

But the clutch is not engaging /still unable to select gears
Am now thinking that the release bearing mounts are tits and its just spinning on the arm that holds it in place.
:bang:
any other ideas very welcome at moment

if the slave cylinder (or cable?) is moving the fork (check visually on top of gearbox) then that must be throwing the bearing towards the diaphram spring. either the release bearing isnt fitted correctly, or it isnt hitting the diaphragm spring, or the spring/plate are not fitted correctly. without seeing the car i cant really say more than that, but you can be fairly certain thats where the problem lies.

cheers Jug

its got to be the release bearing not sitting correctly, the clips on the bearing are broke and the plastic shoulders are split, so i think this is the orginal damage of the bell housing moving. New one shall be fitted when the time is spare and the results of the out come will be posted.
