well as most of you know scotland has been getting hammerd by bad weather, mostly rain. which caused me to find out a slight issue with my tyres, i have no traction what so ever in the rain, which is really bad when it comes to breaking as i almost rear ended a BMW from loss of traction.
I have the standard steel wheels on for winter, can anyone suggest a really good tyre to mount??

Thanks,
-Gordie

you wont see much difference no matter what tread pattern you buy, unless yours are bald.

they're only tyres after all, and a wet road is never going to offer much friction

sorry what i mean is all-season tyres are all approximately the same in the wet because they must pass certain standards to qualify as an all-season tyre in europe. but you're right some are much better than the required standard while others are only just good enough to pass.

most tyre manufacturers design tyres specifically for wet roads, i wouldnt buy them because they tend to wear quickly, cost more, and according to reviews a decent set of all season tyres is just as good as most wet tyres, plus you dont have to lose any dry road performance.

if you believe the reviews and you're brand conscious then try some michelin pilot alpin PA2 tyres, they're winter tyres designed for all road conditions. i never buy the bigger brands such as michelin because experience has shown they're a waste of money, dont last as long, and dont even offer better grip.
from personal expereince i've found the best tyre in the wet is the new kumho ecsta spt. in fact its my favorite all-season tyre and i doubt i'll ever buy anything else. plus it looks nice too.

i was actually thinking on buying the Khumo ecsta spt's when i bought my alloys after the winter, a friend of mine swares by them and has convinced me to buy them. i just dont know if they have a size that will fit my winter wheels.

I had Goodyear F1, and they are excelent on wet, but if you want something cheeper you can try with Bridgestone E300 they were the best summer tyre on some test I reed, and they are especialy good on wet tarmac

Hmmm, I think we're missing the point as bit here. Rampage has a serious question - which tyres best would suit a damp, cold, snowy scottish winter. Clearly his quality brand all-season tyres are not up to the job, so why suggest other all-season tyres?

I reckon he should look at offerings from continental or scandinavian manufacturers - Kleber, Vredestein, Gislaved etc - all brands of major mnanufacturers. They must have tyre ranges in-between warm/all-season and full winters as their climates will be more similar to Scotland. He should stick to the standard 175/65 x 14 for better surface penetration of water, slush, snow etc and probably only needs to change the front tyres since he's FWD.

Edit : Kumho KH15 from blackcircles?

Goodyear GP2 or Continental Contact.

My biggest sugestion is for you to go into one of your local Mconnechy's branch (Used to be Hi-Q) and ask for there advice.

Honnestly they won't bull**** you. I work for a major tyre manufacturer and deal with Mconnechy's every day they are part of big company and won't feed you crap to get your trade.

They are not the cheapest but like everything else you pay service and quallity.
