Hi people,

My car went out of action a week ago or so and a suspected clutch was pointed out to be the culprit. So i took it to the garage today to get the clutch fixed. The clutch got fixed and theres no difference apparently and the mechanic suspects its now a gearbox problem.

any second opinions??

All the symptoms of a completely knackered clutch.. put it in gear and no drive on the car.

many thanks!

chris

Hi

Did the problem just occur in the 1st place did you have a perfectly working car with no clutch slip one day and the next it lost all it's drive?

Did the mechanic put the gearbox back together before telling you this? A faulty clutch worn or damaged to the point where it applying no drive should easily be identified. So if it looked in order alarm bells should have rung at that point.

Could very well be a gearbox fault could be the main drive or lay shaft within the box. :(

thats exactly what happened, was coming out of asda suppermarket and the car just 'bogged' down.felt weird with no/little drive.almost like a brake had jammed on.
lasted a few more days and then went bang!

thanks for the help.

The problem just occured with no warning. was going up a hill and it just started revving with no drive so i pulled over opened the door to hear a buzzing noise coming from under the car. next thing it had no drive what so ever.

Talking to Fiat in the past, it is not uncommon for the first motion shaft to fail, which may initially appear to be similar to the clutch going. The result of the shaft failing sometimes damages the G/box casing beyond repair. If the garage could not detect this, when they took it in for a clutch fault they are pretty incompetent in my opinion.

it is indeed a common problem, if the box etc isnt damaged get a new diff instead of box as it will be considerably cheaper for the part and labluor as the box doesnt need to be removed for the diff swap. done enough of them now to know so dont let a garage fob you off mate :)

plus you can use the diff from a bravo 1.2, a 16v 1.2 punto or and 8v mk1 1.1 & 1.2 punto, the only thing that may need changing is the driveshaft coupling for the passenger side, easy job again :)
