if you can smell fuel you'd be surprised how often that is a sign of a fuel leak.
i'd leave the car for a couple of hours, then smell around the petrol tank and engine bay. if there's a smell it means there is a leak near the tank.
if there isnt a smell you should switch the ignition on to build up fuel pressure. if there is now a smell, there is a leak on a pressurised fuel line (going to engine or back to tank).
if there isnt a smell you should now start the engine. if you can now smell petrol it means the engine is probably overfueling.
