This is an idea for all those who have only one key. If you can have that key which sends the signal copied(2 or 3 times) Then destroy the original key or hide it in the car and if you destroy the key and hide the part that send the signal to the car, either way or the other. This is so that when you start a signal can still be send to the receiver so that the engine will start.
The cause for destroying the key is so that if some one comes across the hidden key that you wont be left stranded. When the key is destroyed and hidden where it can still send a signal it basically will be like starting any other car that dosent have an engine immobliser ect.( I hope). Before destroying or hiding the key try starting to see if it really works.
This is only an idea and anyone who have a better idea or know better I welcome you to post your opinion.
If you have only one coded key and it is lost or misplace for what ever reason what will you do?

Why not just get the blue key cloned at Timpsons? That way you get to keep the immobiliser (unless you want to fit another or risk your insurance going up). There's a sticky about red and blue keys, cloning and coding in the main Barvo/a section :)

The problem is I live in the caribbean and dont know where Timpsons is and even if i knew shipping will be very expensive. Then i will have to ship the key and have it returned. So i have no guarantee that Timpsoms will work.

I just answered on the other forum.

Out of interest which island are you on and what do you have a Brava or Bravo ?

your idea is correct, i've done it on cars before.

open up the key and remove the little glass chip.

sellotape that chip under the steering column plastic, near the ingnition switch barrel.

then you can use an unchipped key to start the car, which any key cutting place should be able to make easily.

the only problem is the car effectively now has no immobiliser and can be started with a screwdriver.

Car theft is fairly low though so not such a worry as here.

Also you can fit an aftermarket alarm, they don't cost a lot these days...

Sorry, didn't realise. In that case I agree with the rest, go for it :)

So can anyone who has only one key take it to Timsons, have it copied a couple times and use any of them to start the car. If so how is it done? Do they copy the signal from the chip and duplicate this?

the machine they use is very simple, it has 2 modes, read and write, they drop your key into a small compartment on the key, its code is then read and displayed on the digital display (or an error if the key is unreadable). then they remove your key and drop the new uncoded key into the same compartment and press the magic button. bingo a clone of your key is now made.

its £20 per key, takes 5 mins, and they even use the original blue colour for the plastic on the key. how thoughful.

so there really is NO EXCUSE for losing all your keys. at £20 a copy you might as well have a set of 3.

Unless you live in Barbados and the nearest key cutter google found (incidently didnt do chipped fiat keys) is in Florida. :p

So I guess the only solution will be to tape the chip under the steering plastic and cut yourself 2 or 3 (regular no chipped) keys which will turn on the car fine as long as the chip is still taped there. And if you're concerned about theft, install an aftermarket alarm with remote....

But first try it before removing the chip from the key :D

it definately works,

and when i've done it to people's cars in the past i've considered the fact that the thief is likely to rip off the plastic around the ignition switch (just go to an auction and see how many stolen recovered cars are like that) so a theif would accidentally activate the immobiliser if they did this. haha

Being a very remote brava i dont think i will have to worry about it being stolen. The island is small and if someone steals it who will buy it or it parts if it is scrapped. I think it will be useless to others.
