Failed MOT, failed suspension strut

Had the car in for its MOT today and it failed on the front left suspension strut, something I did expect as I noticed it being a problem last week, but time not being on my side, only option was to have it checked out at MOT time (car hasnt been used since I noticed the issue).

I dont overly mind that it needs replacing, but what I do mind is weasle like warrenty companies that stick in a clause saying they will not honour the warranty if the failure is found under MOT conditions.

Now hold on, isnt that like the most common time for a fault or failure to be found on most cars?

Re: Failed MOT, failed suspension strut

i've never heard of a warranty clause that says it wont cover problems discovered during an MOT. i have heard of warranties that wont cover anything on a car if it no longer has MOT (roadworthy clause).

cars only get MOT'd after they are 3 years old, who in their right mind would give a warranty on a 3+ year old shock absorber anyway? its a servicable part so shouldnt be covered under warranty.

its very easy to change anyway so why worry, you can get a pair of gas shock for less that 50 and fitting is so easy you can do it at home with a jack and a decent socket & spanner set. fit some lowering springs while your on, you know you want to

Its a General after market warrenty package.
well warrenty direct do cover some wear and tare parts under their policy, shocks included, so I would of been fine, if they didnt have that MOT clause on the policy.

Its being done by the garage I took it too, im useless when it comes to doing stuff like that

Don't say it was found under MOT conditions?

If they're going to be arsy about it then play them back at their own game.

Hellcat got there first but yes, tell them it was pre-MOT check or something. I don't see how it makes any difference when you find out, sounds like they out it in because they know that's when most people will pick up faults.
The same thing happened to me (though I got away with an advisory ) and that was enough for me to get the whole lot lowered and uprated shocks

Re: Failed MOT, failed suspension strut

Scorg I agree with you. My warranty booklet has 3 pages telling me what is not covered and half a page telling me what is. And how the half a page that tells me what is covered is worded in such a way that there is a get out clause for them because they dont actually name anything that is covered. they genrelise by saying all major mechanical parts. something that I would consider to be a major mechanical part they could argue it's not a major mechanical part.

i've said it a million times, warranties aren't worth bugger all unless its on a brand new completely standard car. aftermarket warranties dont cover much, if anything.

Re: Failed MOT, failed suspension strut

Valeen's used car warranty seems pretty good. I had a look through what is covered and its almost the whole car excluding perishables.

Perishables? You mean like Brava door handles?

Re: Failed MOT, failed suspension strut

well they have a rubber cover so technically they are perishables, anything made out of rubber will perish naturally.
