Hi all,
my brother has a 1997 brava td 100 elx with 98000 miles.About a week ago he was driving it and it stalled and would not start. The code light, the glow plug light and the injector light did not come on.
I checked it over and found the main fuse for the ignition (i think it was 40 amp) had blown. Also the injector fuse held behind the glove box had blew also. After replacing these, the code light came on and went off but no injector or glow plug light.
So he left the car into a local garage who could not fix it, but fitted an override switch to manually put on the glow plugs and if you push this switch for 10 seconds and then turn it over, the engine starts.bloody amateurs!!!!
But its running like a tractor!!
I have a couple of questions, will it harm the car running like that? i suspect the whole engine management system is down.
Also as ive said ,i think the ecu is out and thats why the car is in the state its in.Does anyone have any ideas, and is there any tests i can do with a voltmtere to test the ecu at home?

its a really lovely car and i talked him into buying it,so id like to help sort it for him

it does sound like an ecu internal short or failure, either that or a wiring short in the ecu harness. testing an ecu with a multimeter is impossible without an internal diagram or at least a working ecu to compare tests with. you could try getting an ecu and key/lock set from a donor car, scrapyards worth a try. i'd get a diagnostics done at fiat to make sure before you spend any cash, the £30 it costs for a diagnotics can save time and money.
