General KEYS Question

I've bought a new genuine Fiat Key off Ebay I have got it cut and need to program it.

I have followed the instructions off the Workshop manual and all is not going well.

I put the red key in and wait for the code light to go out, the within 10 secconds i put in the new Key turn it on but the code light goes out. Help needed.

There are 2 types of genuine Fiat key, the earlier one fitted to Punto's etc contains a Megamos transponder, the Bravo etc uses one made by Temic.
You can not use a Megamos on a Temic system and vice-versa. If you have a working blue key, then just copy it, there is nothing lost by having 2 keys with same code. If you dont have a blue key, then get the correct one from Fiat, or borrow your friends Bravo keys and have them cloned.
Tony.

whats the problem? its supposed to go out. after it goes out insert the second blue key, then the red again, then you're done :)

if you havent got a second blue key (different code to 1st) you cant do it.

Hi, been reading about the keys episode. Would using just the RED key cause intermitant starting ? Sometimes the 96 Bravo fires up first go, sometimes it will not fire up ? I am going to sort out a set of BLUE keys and see if this works.

Regards

SC

no, intermittent starting problems should not be related to the red key. it could be due to a faulty code reader aerial on the ignition, but thats very rare. i'd think the lambda sensor is to blame if it only happens when the engine is warm (i.e. if it always starts first thing on a morning). hope that helps :)

Hi, i have had my Bravo 1.25 80sx for three months now, I was given my red key along with 2 blue keys which were both damaged but working. About a month into having the car, it started not starting on the first or second turn but starting on the third, now 2 months later i can sometimes sit outside for 10 mins trying to start it. I brought a new key as the oters were damaged but it still done the same thing. It doesnt do it all the time but is really starting to annoy me now. We took the car to a garage who said that it could be in need of a service so i paid out to have a complete service but its still doing it. The car will start from being left over night, we thought it could be something to do with the immobiliser but the key light on the dash goes out to show that the immobiliser is turned off. The engine turns ok so its nt the starter motor but it does make a clonking sound when it wont start. Has anyone else had this problem or know of anyone? And how have hey solved it?

I know you think that the starter motor is ok but it sounds to me as if that is where your problem lies. Is the clonking sound coming from your starter motor? If so, you may have an intermittent loose power connection problem either at the battery or at the starter motor. If the connections are alright, the starter may be on it's way out and is creating too much of a power drain to turn the engine over fast enough to start it. The clonking sound would mean that it is not fully engaging. Have someone try to start the car while you have your head under the bonnet. If it is that starter motor, it will be quite apparent. Iv'e had this problem in the past with a variety of cars and it was always a duff starter motor. You should be able to get a replacement from the scrappy for £10-£15. Nothing worse than a car that won't start, especially at this time of year.

ecu question

I bought a fiat brava with only 1 blue key which I have lost.I eventually found someoene who took away the ecu and other little box and reprogrammed the ecu and now have 2blue keys and a red key which is in fact just a blue key and cant be used for resetting the ecu.The car now starts and drives but the engine management system light will not stop flashing even though the faultcodes have been reset.Sorry about my lack of technical jargon but what can I do to stop this light falshing.

sounds like the immobiliser has been disabled. i bet you could use an unchipped key to start the car, or even a screwdriver with a bit of force. it may be worth testing with an unchipped key, if the car starts you may want to install an immobiliser to prevent theft.

i would remove the keycode fault light bulb from the dash and forget all about it. oh and slap yourself for not copying your original key before you lost it. :D

Hiya,

I have only got onr blue key for my Bravo. I'm happy to just clode them, but is there any disadvantage, for example what happens if the battery is flattened, does the ECU need reprogramming, will it 'forget' about my keys?

If there is a compelling reason to get a new Red master key, what would be the most econmical way to go?

Thanks in advance

Dave

there is a very small chance that if the battery is flat or disconnected for some time, the blue key codes may be lost by the codebox. in that situation you would need the red key. but there is only a very small chance and if it did happen you could then do something about it, so dont worry. the only other reason to get a red key is if you want to program other keys into the immob. there's no need to ever do that if you get a couple of clones made of your key at timpsons. at least get 1 copy made, it doesnt cost much.

brilliant thank you very much for your answer. I'll just clone my keys 3 times and make sure we use a battery saver device in the ciggy lighter to maintain the charge when changing the battery.

If ever I can be of assisstance in my areas of expertise I gladly will - thats adventure motorcycling and flash web development :)

cheers!

Yellow light on Dashboard???

Hi I'm having trouble with my Fiat Bravo HGT, for some reason when I'm driving along the engine will completely cut out without me realizing, but when i start the car back up a yellow key with code on it will appear on my dashboard, but if i turn the car off and try again the key will disappear, also it may just be coincidence but it only seems to do it when I'm breaking, i have the red key and two blue keys, but i dont have any batteries in the blue keys as the car keeps locking and unlocking itself when im not touching it, any ideas?

I am still unclear about 1 thing.

Do virgin keys from locksmiths come with a brand new code of their own??

I have 1 red key and 1 blue key. I want a second blue key but am undecided as to whether I should just clone my blue key.

My understanding so far is that if, for any reason my ecu lost its memory of my blue key, then I could not reprogram it with a red key and 2 cloned blue keys. I would instead need a red key and 2 unique blue keys.

I understand that I can clone the code of a friends key if I can find a willing bravo/a owner, but if brand new keys from a locksmiths have a code on already then this won't be necessary.

Can someone clear this up for me pleasey :)

no. where would that new code come from
when you get a key copied at a locksmiths, they give you exactly that, a copy. they copy the old code onto the new key.

that is correct, but the chance of the blue key codes getting lost is so small that you shouldnt worry.

plus, even if it did happen, you could easily borrow or buy another key to use the code for programming. if you really did need one just go on ebay and buy an old key (often under £5).

Just bought my fiat bravo TD SX...99 ONe blue key only......
Went to a local key maker in leeds and £15 and 5mins later hey presto, new key with code and works fine....Just hope i will never need the red key...Trying to trace previous owners if they have the red key and service hist but not holding out on that one.....:bang:

Hi
my brava has one red key and one blue key. i'd like to get a unique second blue key made. does anyone know can i clone a transponder code from a key of a punto mk1 (99 Reg) and use it for my brava. i don't know anyone else with a brava or bravo. my friend has a punto. Obviously i get the key cut in the shape of my brava key, but then get it coded as the punto code and follow the instructions for re-coding keys posted earlier.

Another question, i want to get the central locking relay fitted to my brava. Can i get one of the Stilo looking keys cut for a Brava and Code it appropriately???

Thanks,

Daithi

both are fiat code system1 so that will work fine.

i guess you mean remote central locking, since your car already has central locking.
(if you dont have central locking, just stick the standard yellow relay in behind the glovebox and it should work. the relay will cost £1 at a scrapyard so its worth a try)

if you want remote central locking, the stilo uses a different remote frequency and system so you cant use a stilo key's remote. you could probably get a stilo key and use the plastic casing to hold your metal blank and immob chip (so your key looks like stilo one and works the locks and engine), but you cant use the remote.

also note, you dont 'code' a remote key, it had a rolling code system built in, which must be paired with the car's receiver using an existing programming code. you need a lot more than a relay to get remote central locking working, unless you buy one of the relay upgrade kits that has a special relay with an aerial. these kits are very easy to fit and come with remotes. you simply plug the relay in and it works.
