well taken my new Fiat Bravo to the garage today and am terrified of whats going to be wrong with it. That noise has gotton worse and worse over the course of this week and so i had to bite the bullet and take it to a garage to get i checked out.

all i can do now is wait and hear what they say.

however as long as the car is 100% safe that is all that matters so if things need replacing then they can do it. But i feel a big hole developing in my pocket

well if its been getting worse at least it should be easier to find the problem. i hate it when you have an intermittent problem that dissapears whenever you take your car to a garage but then it comes back 5 mins later on the way home. those problems annoy the hell out of me. fingers crossed it will be good news for you

well its new brake pads, and tyres and allsorts.......not fair am proper upset now.

well atleast i now know that my car will have decent brakes when they fixed

erm ok

right now i have the car back and after a job well done and very professionally

i have had

brake discs x 2
brake pads x 1
new tyres x 4
safety valves x 4
wheel balancing x 4

and also wheel allignment

and i aint gonna tell ya the price but it was alot

brake discs x 2 - £40 ish
brake pads x 1 - £20 ish
new tyres x 4 - £120ish for Bridgestone Potenzas
safety valves x 4 - Safety Valves? On what? Do you mean on the wheels?
wheel balancing x 4 - A fiver a wheel tops.

I make it about £200.

i aint gonna tell you how much is should cost then

anyway i will tell you just be awkward :p

front discs £8 each
front pads £12
fitting dics and pads varies but usually £35 (free if you have tools and a spare hour)
tyres for the 14" steel wheels are £28 each fitted balanced and with new valves
tracking (wheel alignment) is £15

so a total for getting it done at a local garage round here would be £190
i have an adjustment factor to add because most people i speak to on forums seem to pay crazy prices, the adjustment is approx 1.65, so 190 * 1.65 = £313.50 for an average forum member at an average garage with an average bravo. lets round it off to £315

was i close? come on tell me, i'm trying to improve my adjustment factor.

more importantly what the hell are safety valves:confused:
i assume you mean the new valves that get fitted every time a tyre is changed. never heard of safe ones, i guess that implies other valves arent safe?

hey hellcat you must have posted while i was writing my post, and we both got about 200quid, and we both live in the north east. pretty good eh!

it was alot thats all am gonna say....

well alot for a uni student to pay :bang:

but its sorted now. and as they say no point crying over spilled milk

the 1.2 has solid discs which are way cheaper that the vented beautys we hav on our 1.8s. those prices are what i paid for discs and pads on my 1.6 in february, i got the parts from carcare in peterlee, although KNS in peterlee is usually only a couple of pounds more, then there's autosave in sunderland which is really cheap for some bits, i got kyb excel-g gas shocks (x4) for £78 on my escort about 18months ago. bargain

lol erm now lets see how long it is before i have to spend over 100 pounds on the car to keep it going

Brake pads x1  I would hope they replaced both been as you had new discs as well. If the fronts are going, did they check the rears as well? Mine went at much the same time :( And did you really need four new tyres? Due to the driving and braking being mostly from the front, I need the front tyres replaced before the rears (though last service they did get swapped for more even wear). When you say very professionally, please say you didn't take it to a dealer

no way not a dealer

they replaced all the tyres cause they were well worn out and they would not of passed the mot. So its good to get them sorted out now rather than later. and they did a full brake safety check on the car, it was well below standard so they sorted that out. thats why it needed so much work doing to it, atleast i have got peace of mind now.

good point dillinger39, if you're going to spend money it might as well be on things that can save your life and pass MOTs. i've seen so many cars with bodykits and massive alloys and the owner wont spend a few quid on brakes and tyres. its daft wasting money on 17" wheels if you cant afford to keep legal tyres on them.

and if i see another head gasket failure caused by frozen coolant i'm going to start a war, why people cant stick a bit of antifreeze in their coolant once every 3 years is beyond me, it costs a couple of quid in asda but will people bother, will they hell. i can guarantee next winter i'll have half a dozen people asking me to replace their head gasket, fools the lot of them

Im confused you are a mechanic or not, part of your sig says EX, please enlighten me :D

as long as there are cars on the roads there are need for skilled mechanics, am sure Jug is a skilled mechanic and has had his share of neglected cars.

the main problem now a days is.

i am not implying this is anyone on here. so noone get the wrong idea of that.

is people buy a car, and use it everyday to go to and from work for 365 days a year and then when things get worn out they cry about it. saying how come its costing me so much. the best thing to do is get things sorted out straight away and keep you and your car safe.

thats why i get things done and sorted out and then i have the peace of mind that the atleast the car i am driving around in is 100% safe.
