hi people.... can anybody advise on this problem? my dad has a y reg brava 1.2 80sx which ever since been 6months old has had an erratic temp gauge. it goes up to halfway then up to 3/4 then back down and so on, the car runs perfect but has been in to fiat under warranty a couple of times but they never managed to fix this (usual fiat). so now we are determined to sort it out as when it shoots up to 3/4 if u tap the dash above the gauge it drops down to half then stays there usually!! :) the car doesnt overheat but just the gauge has a mind of its own... also when does the cambelt & tensioner need doing on the 1.2 as the car has done 40k now. thanks

Thump the dash, usually works for a bit. If it shoots up and down very quickly then it is most likely just the gauge - if it moves more slowly then it could be something further back such as thermostat or sensor.

As for the cambelt, Fiat recommend 72k but most owners like to get it done sooner at 48 or 60k for that margin of safety :)

hi, thanx 4 reply! it must be the gauge itself then as i'm sure fiat replaced a sensor when it was in with this problem! can the temp gauge be replaced? also the cambelt/tensioner is getting done in next few weeks as like u say its best to be on safe side. (y)
