Please can someone offer some advice.

Our 1.4 S Reg Brava wouldn't start if we turned the engine off and returned to the car a short while later to start the engine again.

We bought a new battery because the AA man told us that was the problem and when it kept doing it we put a new starter motor in....and its still doing it although it will start again without having to leave it for about 2 hours.

When you turn the key it just sounds as if the battery is flat. :bang: :bang: :bang:

While I'm on here I might as well pick your brains about something else too. We put a new Idle Control Stepper Motor thingummy in because the car was running like a bag of sh*t, the red light kept coming on and it kept cutting out and now the red light still comes on although the car hasn't cut out or started bouncing up the road again as yet. Do we have to get the red light re-set or is there something else wrong?

I'd be very grateful for any replies. :worship:

Hot starting is becoming a more common problem as the Bravs get older I'm afraid. It's likely to be either the crank sensor or the temp sender/sensor(?) that's at fault.

Hi

Thanks for replying.

It turns over very slowly, definitely no clicking.

Are the crank sensor and temperature sender/sensor likely to be covered in the Haynes Manual or if this is the problem is it gonna be a garage job?

replacing the sensors isnt hard.although you may be better getting a diagnostic done at fiat. costs around £50 IIRC but may save a lot of guesswork.
could be the starter motor is worn or dry and is causing resistence hence the slow starting. if oyu can get a multimeter put it across the battery with the engine runnig to read the voltage, then with loads of electrics on and see what voltage the alternator is putting out.

Sorry, didn't read the original post properly.

You say you don't have to wait for it to cool down anymore so the sensors are most likely OK.

If you have replaced the batt and the starter then the next likely cause is the alternator. They invariably go very soon after the battery becomes a problem so it may be worthwhile checking if it's charging the battery as suggested above. I have had several cars where shortly after the battery has been replaced the alternator has gone (Shabash! blew her alt within 3 months of the battery dying) so it's very common.
