First of all hi guys!

We have just bought a car for our son, Fiat Brava 80 SX 1.2 16v. Got it off ebay, looks like a real good car - wait for it apart from.........

The horrible vibration of acceleration, that goes away some on constant speed!
Well i am kinda handy with a spanner so i have had a look and my thoughts were inner cv joint. Having had a poke about underneath, the actual joint seems to be ok, but there seems to be quite a lot of play in the 'shaft as it goes into the diff. (this seems to be a cup and tripod stye of cv joint0
This seems a bit more of a job than a coupling change, but i was wondering is it a simple job to change the support bearing - if this is indeed the problem.
I would appreciate any comments, or a cut away drawing of the gearbox assembly.
Many thanks
Simon

Welcome to the forum :)

There should be play in the driveshaft going into the box, not to much but it is normal. Id start looking at the balljoint. The gears should be precise and easy to slot into, crunching suggests worn synchros from rough changing... A wild stab could be a wonkey/unbalanced tyre or buckled/eccentric wheel as these also create a horrible droning sound and vibration.

Keep us updated! :)

we had a similar Marea problem , ( wheel bearing)
easiest fix was to hoist the car onto axle stands and then "RUN" it through the gears,
easy to locate exactly when and where noises /vibration are building,
you can run with no wheels , or one wheel on the ground to spin the other..,

I am experiencing the same problem with my wifes SX80. I have however experienced the same problem on a Saxo and on a Punto. The innner cv on the SX80 was pretty dry on both sides so I have packed with grease and hoped things would get betters. However this was not the case, I also noticed that the shaft were it goes into the gearbox shows some movement. My next job is to pull the shafts check if new partts are required. I do have a spare box, so I may rebuild this just in case all else fails.
Try to keep you posted.

Hi
I have a Bravo 80 SX 1.2 16v (51 plate), & would expect the same power unit & driveline on a Brava. Have just recently dropped the front suspension, driveshafts and gearbox off to do a clutch change. I have a long driveshaft and a short driveshaft. They are both single piece with no support bearing - so I am a little confused. Or do I misunderstand?

There will (must) be axial play in the inboard CVJ to accomodate driveshaft length changes with suspension articulation. So this is normal. Indeed required.

When accelerating, as opposed to cruising, you will have torque windup in the driveline, suspension and engine mounts. This changes the characteristics of the rubber bushings and mounts. So look for wear/disbonding/cracking of all bushings & rubber mounts. Worn ball joints and worn dry CVJ's won't help either.

Good luck
